Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

Important Vocabulary from The Hindu Editorial: 7th April, 2021

1. Word: Fragile (कमज़ोर)

  • Pronunciation: fraj-uh l/फ्रैजल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. easily broken, shattered, or damaged; delicate; brittle; frail
    b. vulnerably delicate, as in appearance
    c. lacking in substance or force; flimsy
  • Synonyms: delicate, weak, frail, feeble
  • Antonyms: unbreakable, firm, strong
  • Usage in a sentence: One's ego should not be so fragile that it is hurt at the drop of a hat.

2. Word: Reboot (पुनरारंभ या पुनर्जीवित)

  • Pronunciation: re-boot/ रीबूट
  • Part of speech: Verb
  • Meaning: restart or revive (a process or sequence, especially a series of films or television programmes); give fresh impetus to.
  • Synonyms: reissue, restart, reactivate
  • Antonyms: shut down, conclude, finish, end
  • Usage in a sentence: I hope that the filmmakers make the most of the opportunity to reboot the franchise.

3. Word: Apparent (स्पष्ट)

  • Pronunciation: uh-par-uhnt/ अपेरन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: clearly visible or understood; obvious.
  • Synonyms: obvious, evident, clear
  • Antonyms: unclear, mysterious
  • Usage in a sentence: It soon became apparent that the company was losing money.

4. Word: Straddle (पैर फैलाकर खड़ा होना)

  • Pronunciation: strad-l/स्ट्रैडल
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. to combine different styles or subjects (Verb)
    b. something that straddles a line, such as a border or river, exists on each side of it or goes across it (Verb)
    c. to stand wide apart, as the legs (Verb)
    d. an act or instance of straddling (Noun)
    e. the distance straddled over (Noun)
  • Synonyms: bestride, span, range, mount
  • Antonyms: side by side, border, side
  • Usage in a sentence: He pulled on his helmet and straddled the motorbike.

5. Word: Protocol (नयाचार)

  • Pronunciation: proh-tuh-kawl/ प्रोटोकोल
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality, precedence, and etiquette.
    b. an original draft, minute, or record from which a document, especially a treaty, is prepared.
    c. a supplementary international agreement.
    d. an agreement between states.
    e. an annex to a treaty giving data relating to it.
  • Synonyms: etiquette, convention, treaty, decorum
  • Antonyms: crudeness, disagreement, lawlessness
  • Usage in a sentence: It was imperative to follow the protocols to ensure safe passage. 

6. Word: Diaspora (प्रवासी)

  • Pronunciation: dahy-as-per-uh/ डाइऐस्पोरा
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.
    b. people who have spread or been dispersed from their homeland.
  • Synonyms: migration, dissolution, dispersal, separation, banishment
  • Antonym: concentration
  • Usage in a sentence: When it is explored in-depth, our cuisine reveals the nuances of regions and peoples and those of diaspora and return.

7. Word: Provenance (उत्पत्ति)

  • Pronunciation: prov-uh-nuh ns/ प्रावनन्स
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the place of origin or earliest known history of something.
  • Synonyms: origin, source, birthplace
  • Antonyms: end, conclusion, demise
  • Usage in a sentence: There's no proof about the provenance of the painting.

8. Word: Travail (घोर श्रम) 

  • Pronunciation: truh-veyl/ ट्रवेल
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: engage in a painful or laborious effort.
  • Synonyms: toil, fatigue, challenge
  • Antonyms: ease, relaxation
  • Usage in a Sentence: The travails of the British car industry are seldom out of the news.

9. Word: Wield (उपयोग करना)

  • Pronunciation: weeld/ वील्ड
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: have and be able to use (power or influence).
  • Synonyms: handle, exert, utilize
  • Antonyms: conceal, flip
  • Usage in a sentence: Though the central banks wield enormous power, we should not overstate their ability to shape the economy in the long run.

10. Word: Escalate (बढ़ाना)

  • Pronunciation: es-kuh-leyt/ एस्कलैट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: increase rapidly, make or become more intense or serious.
  • Synonyms: intensify, heighten
  • Antonyms: diminish, abbreviate
  • Usage in a Sentence: The conflict could escalate rapidly into a full-scale war.

11. Word: Assuage  (शांत करना) 

  • Pronunciation: as-suage/
  • Part of speech: noun 
  • Meaning: to provide relief; causing to feel better
  • Synonyms: relieve, ease, alleviate, soothe, mitigate
  • Antonyms: intensify, aggravate, agitate
  • Usage in a sentence: In an effort to assuage angry customers, the store issued everyone a full refund.

12. Word: Insurmountable (जो परास्त न किया जा सके)

  • Pronunciation: in-ser-moun-tuh-buh l/इन्सर्माउन्टबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: too great to be overcome.
  • Synonyms: insuperable, unconquerable, invincible
  • Antonyms: attainable, achievable, easy
  • Use in a Sentence: The language difference proved an insurmountable barrier.
