Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

Important Vocabulary from The Hindu Editorial: 5th March, 2022

1. Word: Rubric (शीर्षक)

  • Pronunciationroo-brik/ रूब्रिक
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:  
    a. a heading on a document
    b. a set of instructions or rules
  • Synonyms: title, formula, heading, rule, category
  • Usage in a Sentence: The rubrics at the beginning of the chapters are intended to be humorous.

2. WordDecry (निंदा करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-krahy/ डिक्राइ
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: publicly denounce
  • Synonyms: denounce, condemn, criticize
  • Antonyms: exalt, applaud, compliment
  • Usage in a Sentence: He is impatient with those who decry the scheme.

3. Word: Enshrine (प्रतिष्ठापित करना)

  • Pronunciation: en-shrahyn/ एन्श्राइन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. place (a revered or precious object) in an appropriate receptacle.
    b. preserve (a right, tradition, or idea) in a form that ensures it will be protected and respected.
  • Synonyms: sanctify, consecrate, exalt
  • Antonyms: defile, desecrate, disrespect, debase, degrade
  • Usage in a Sentence: Some teachers tend to enshrine their personal preferences as sacred rules of English grammar.

4. Word:  Cascade (जलप्रपात/प्रपात के रूप में गिरना)

  • Pronunciation: kas-keyd/कैस्कैड
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a waterfall descending over a steep, rocky surface.
    b. a series of shallow or step-like waterfalls, either natural or artificial.
    c. anything that resembles a waterfall, especially in seeming to flow or fall in abundance.
  • Synonyms: stream, spill, gush, surge
  • Antonyms: drizzle, trickle, drought
  • Usage in a sentence: Her deep brown hair cascaded over her back.

5. Word: Exemplify (उदाहरण देना)

  • Pronunciation: exem-pli-fie/ इग्ज़ेम्प्लफाइ
  • Parts of speech: Verb
  • Meaning:  to show or illustrate by example
  • Synonyms: illustrate, demonstrate, instance.
  • Antonyms:  becloud, blur, cloud, darken, fog
  • Usage in a sentence: The movie exemplified everything that is wrong with the film industry.

6.  Word: Grim (ख़राब)

  • Pronunciation: grim/ग्रिम
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. very serious or gloomy.
    b. (especially of a place) unattractive or forbidding.
  • Synonyms: gloomy, bleak
  • Antonyms: cheerful, compassionate
  • Usage in a Sentence: When he lost his job, his future looked grim.

  • Pronunciation: skey-th ing/स्कैदिंग

  • Meaning
    a. bitterly severe, as a remark
    b. harmful, injurious, or searing
  • Synonyms: harsh, sarcastic, acrimonious
  • Antonyms: gentle, mild, humble, delicate
  • Usage in a sentence: He planned a scathing attack on the president.

8. Word: Throng (जमाव,भीड़ लगाना)

  • Pronunciation: थ्रॉंग/thrawng
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a crowd or a large group of people
    b. to be or go somewhere in very large numbers
  • Synonyms: crowd, swarm, pack, flock, horde
  • Antonyms: few, empty, dismiss, take apart
  • Usage in a sentence: The narrow streets were thronged with summer visitors.

9. Word: Catastrophic (अनर्थकारी)

  • Pronunciation: kat-uh-strof-ik/कैटस्ट्राफिक
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. of the nature of a catastrophe, or disastrous event; calamitous
  • Synonyms: disastrous, tragic, ruinous, destructive
  • Antonyms: harmless, lucky, encouraging
  • Usage in a sentence: She had to put her catastrophic Olympic performance out of her mind.

10. Word: Leverage (लाभ उठाना)

  • Pronunciation: lev-er-ij/लीवरिज
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:

        a. power or ability to act or to influence people, events, decisions, etc.; sway

  • Synonyms: advantage, authority, supremacy
  • Antonyms: inferiority, poorness, weakness 
  • Use in a Sentence: We'll have to use leverage to get our things done.
