Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

1. Word: Vociferous (कोलाहलकारी)

  • Pronunciation: voh-sif-er-uhs/ वोसिफर
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: expressing or characterized by vehement opinions; loud and forceful.
  • Synonyms: clamorous, noisy, blatant, strident, tumultuous
  • Antonyms: quiet, diffident, gentle, tranquil
  • Usage in a sentence: The minority population became more vociferous in its demands.

2. Word: Repeal (खण्डन)

  • Pronunciation: ree-peel/रीपील
  • Part of Speech: Noun, verb
  • Meaning: revoke or annul (a law or act of parliament) (Verb)
    the action of revoking or annulling a law or act of parliament (Noun)
  • Synonyms: abolition, revocation
  • Antonyms: approval, passage
  • Usage in a sentence: Taking over the company, the new manager’s first act was to repeal many of the outdated policies.

3. Word: Expedite (शीघ्रता करना)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: make (an action or process) happen sooner or be accomplished more quickly.
  • Synonyms: accelerate, hasten, speed up, quicken
  • Antonyms: delay, impede, hinder, check
  • Usage in a Sentence: We must expedite the development of the Southwest area of our country.

4. Word: Jurisdiction (अधिकार-क्षेत्र)

  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Pronunciation: joo r-is-dik-shuh n/जुरिस्डिक्शन
  • Meaning: the official power to make legal decisions and judgements.
  • Synonyms: authorities, competences
  • Antonyms: incapacities
  • Use in a Sentence: In some jurisdictions, this is a mandatory sentence of death.

5. Word: Substantial (संतोषजनक)

  • Pronunciation: subs-tan-cial/ सब्स्टैन्शल
  • Meaning: referring to something that is greater or larger than normal
  • Synonyms: considerable, real, material, weighty,
  • Antonyms: insubstantial, worthless
  • Usage in a sentence: Known for his substantial efforts in winning, the competitive boy rarely could find someone to play against because the opponent knew he would lose.

6. Word: Partial (आंशिक)

  • Pronunciation: pahr-shuhl/पार्शल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. being such in part only; not total or general; incomplete (Adjective)
    b. biased or prejudiced in favor of a person, group, side, etc., over another, as in a controversy (Adjective)
    c. pertaining to or affecting a part (Adjective)
    d. one part that makes up a complex musical note (Noun)
  • Synonyms: incomplete, prejudiced, biased, unfair
  • Antonyms: complete, impartial, unprejudiced, just, fair
  • Usage in a sentence: There has been a partial restructuring of our HR department.

7. Word: Contain (अटाना)

  • Pronunciation: kuhn-teyn/कन्टैन
  • Part of Speech: Verb 
  • Meaning:
    a. to hold or include within its volume or area
    b. to control or hide a strong emotion, such as excitement or anger
    c. to keep within limits and not to allow to spread
  • Synonyms: hold, include, control
  • Antonyms: exclude, unleash, vent
  • Usage in a sentence: Medical teams were scrambling to contain the virus that has already killed thousands in Latin America.

8. Word: Retrenchment (छंटनी)

  • Pronunciation: ri-trench-muh nt/ रीट्रेन्च्मन्ट

  • Meaning
    a. the reduction of costs or spending in response to economic difficulty.
    b. reduction in the extent or quantity of something.
  • Synonyms: reduction, decrease, curtailment, downsizing, contraction
  • Antonyms: addition, expansion, extension, growth, increase
  • Usage in a sentence: The administration's distancing from Northern Ireland is part of a conscious pattern of diplomatic retrenchment.

9. Word: Piecemeal (अलग-अलग)

  • Meaning: characterized by unsystematic partial measures taken over a period of time.
