Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

1. WordTurmoil (खलबली)

  • Pronunciation: tur-moil/टर्मॉइल
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty.      
  • Synonyms: disorder, clutter, chaos, mess
  • Antonyms: calm, peace, structure
  • Usage in a Sentence: His mind was in a state of constant turmoil.

2. Word: Allude (प्रसंगवश उल्लेख करना)

    a. suggest or call attention to indirectly; hint at.
    b. mention without discussing at length.

  • Usage in a Sentence: You mustn't allude to his baby's death when you meet John.

3. Word: Lucrative (लाभदायक)

  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: producing a great deal of profit.
  • Synonyms: profitable, remunerative, gainful, fruitful, advantageous
  • Antonyms: unprofitable, baneful, damaging
  • Usage in a sentence: The business has proved to be highly lucrative

4. Word: Resurrect (पुनर्जीवित करना)

  • Pronunciation: rez-uh-rekt/रेज़रेक्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. to raise from the dead; bring to life again
    b. to bring back into use, practice, etc.
    c. to rise from the dead
  • Synonyms: revive, resuscitate, raise
  • Antonyms: abash, accomplish
  • Usage in a sentence: Almost all Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead.

5. Word: Sacrosanct (पवित्र)

  • Pronunciationsak-roh-sangkt/ सैक्रोसैंगक्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: (especially of a principle, place, or routine) regarded as too important or valuable to be interfered with.
  • Synonyms: sacred, divine, holy, inviolable
  • Antonyms: nonreligious, irreligious, profane, irreverent
  • Usage in a sentence: The tradition is regarded as sacrosanct.

6. Word: Siege (अवरोध)

  • Pronunciation: seej/ सीज
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling those inside to surrender.
  • Synonyms: blockade, beleaguerment
  • Antonyms: relief
  • Usage in a sentence: The judge said the police had mishandled the siege.

8. Word: Portent (पूर्वसूचना)

  • Pronunciation: pawr-tent/पोर्टेन्ट 
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. a sign or warning that a momentous or calamitous event is likely to happen.
    b. an exceptional or wonderful person or thing.
  • Synonyms: prognostic, premonition
  • Antonyms: expectation
  • Usage in a Sentence: I hope this news is a portent for the rest of the year.

9. Word: Doldrums (मंदी)

  • Pronunciation: dohl-druhmz/ डोल्ड्रम्ज़
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a state of inactivity or stagnation, as in business or art:
    b. a dull, listless, depressed mood; low spirits.
  • Synonyms: depression, gloom, stagnation
  • Antonyms: happiness, elation, joy
  • Usage in a sentence: August is a time of doldrums for many enterprises.

10. Word: Roil (क्रोधित करना)

  • Pronunciation: Roil/रॉइल
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. to render (water, wine, etc.) turbid by stirring up sediment
    b. to disturb or disquiet; irritate; vex
    c. to move or proceed turbulently
  • Synonyms: rile, churn, moil, disturb
  • Antonyms: calm, pacify, appease
  • Usage in a sentence: A massive tower of smoke roiled skyward.
