Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

Keeping this vision in mind, we bring to you the series, ‘Improve your Vocabulary from Newspaper Wordlist’. The articles in this series fulfill your daily intake of English words.

The series tries to feature words from an article, with their meanings, contextual usage, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, proper use in sentences, etc.

1. Word: Sedition (राजद्रोह)

  • Pronunciation: si-dish-uhn/ सिडिशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch.
  • Synonyms: insurrection, mutiny, treason, revolt, rebellion
  • Antonyms: loyalty, allegiance, obedience, submission
  • Usage in a sentence: The leaders of the group have been arrested and charged with sedition.

2. Word: Prominent (प्रतिष्ठित)

  • Meaning
    a. important; famous
    b. projecting from something; protuberant
    c. situated so as to catch the attention; noticeable
  • Synonyms: important, leading, eminent, protruding, projecting, obvious, noticeable 
  • Antonyms: unimportant, obscure, unknown, inconspicuous
  • Usage in a Sentence
    a. He quickly became prominent in the music industry.
    b. He placed the award in a prominent position on his desk.
    c. He has a prominent nose.

3. Word: Frivolous (ओछा, चंचल)

  • Pronunciationfriv-uh-luhs/ फ्रिवलस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. not having any serious purpose or value.
    b. (of a person) carefree and superficial.
  • Synonyms: foolish, silly, superficial, shallow, trifing
  • Antonyms: serious, solemn, mature, sensible
  • Usage in a sentence: She thinks window shopping is a frivolous activity.

4. Word: Outrage (उपद्रव)

  • Pronunciationout-reyj/ आउट्रेज
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning
    a. an extremely strong reaction of anger, shock, or indignation. (Noun)
    b. an action or event causing outrage. (Noun)
    c. arouse fierce anger, shock, or indignation in (someone). (Verb)
    d. flagrantly violate or infringe (a principle, law, etc.). (Verb)
  • Synonyms: fury, savagery, brutality
  • Antonyms: delight, flattery, remedy
  • Usage in a Sentence: Much of the outrage was directed at foreign nationals.

5. Word: Connote (का संकेत करना)

  • Pronunciation: kuh-noht/ कनोट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. (of a word) imply or suggest (an idea or feeling) in addition to the literal or primary meaning.
    b. (of a fact) imply as a consequence or condition.
  • Synonyms: indicate, imply, mean, signify, denote, suggest, express
  • Usage in a sentence: Families were once more likely to accept the notion that higher price also connoted high quality.

6. Word: Vexatious (सन्ताप देने वाला)

  • Pronunciation: vek-sey-shuhs/ वेक्सेशस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: causing or tending to cause annoyance, frustration, or worry.
  • Synonyms: irritating, troublesome, annoying, irksome
  • Antonyms: comfortable, convenient, helpful, pleasing, soothing
  • Usage in a sentence: I used to hate those vexatious phone calls from telemarketers during the dinner hour.

7. Word: Cognisable (संज्ञेय)

  • Pronunciationkog-nuh-zuh-buh l/ काग्निज़बल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. perceptible; clearly identifiable.
    b. within the jurisdiction of a court.
  • Synonyms: perceptible, indicated, evident, perceptible, likely
  • Usage in a Sentence: A hieroglyph is an emblem of something not cognisable by the senses but which possesses qualities resembling those of the symbol.

8. Word: Astounding (विस्मयकारक)

  • Pronunciation: uh-stoun-ding/ अस्टाउन्डिंग
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: surprisingly impressive or notable.
  • Synonyms: astonishing, amazing, incredible
  • Antonyms: boring, dull, unimpressive
  • Usage in a sentence: The Chairman's remarks were so astounding that the audience listened to him with bated breath.

9. Word: Intervene (हस्तक्षेप करना)

  • Pronunciation: in-ter-veen/ इन्टर्वीन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. take part in something so as to prevent or alter a result or course of events.
    b. occur in the time between events.
  • Synonyms: interfere, interpose, intercede, meddle
  • Antonyms: ignore, disregard, leave, avoid
  • Usage in a Sentence: The prisoner asked me to intervene with the authorities on his behalf.

10. Word: Abrogation (निराकरण)

  • Pronunciation: ab-ruh-gey-shuh n / ऐब्रगेशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the repeal or abolition of a law, right, or agreement.
  • Synonyms: repeal, abolition, annulment
  • Antonyms: collaboration, appointment, mandate
  • Usage in a sentence: Measures for the abrogation shall be stipulated by the State Council.

11. Word: Indiscriminate (अंधाधुंध, अभेदकर)

  • Pronunciation: in-di-skrim-uh-nit/ इन्डिस्क्रिमनट

    a. done at random or without careful judgement.
    b. (of a person) not using or exercising discrimination.

12. Word: Incitement (उत्तेजना)

13. Word: Farcical (हास्यास्पद)

  • Meaning: relating to or resembling farce, especially because of absurd or ridiculous aspects.
  • Synonyms: ridiculous, ludicrous, absurd, laughable, foolish

  • Usage in a sentence: The farcical behaviour of the troupe of circus clowns left the children giggling.
