Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

1. Word: Hyperbolic (अतिशयोक्तिपूर्ण)

  • Pronunciation: hahy-per-bol-ik/ हाइपर्बालिक

    a. relating to a hyperbola.
    b. (of language) deliberately exaggerated.
  • Synonyms: exaggerated, inflated, overstated, grandiloquent

4. Word: Dissonance (असंगति)

    a. lack of harmony among musical notes.
    b. lack of agreement or harmony between people or things.
  • Synonyms: disagreement, discord, disharmony, discrepancy

5. Word: Prerogative (प्राधिकार)

    a. a right or privilege exclusive to a particular individual or class.
    b. a faculty or property distinguishing a person or class.

7. Word: Allegiance (वफादारी)

  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: loyalty or commitment to a superior or to a group or cause.
  • Synonyms: loyalty, fealty, fidelity, devotion, faithfulness
  • Antonyms: treason, disloyalty, betrayal, treachery
  • Usage in a Sentence: Both candidates are working hard to convince voters to switch allegiances.

8. Word: Enumerate (गणना करना)

10. Word: Pander (ख़ुश करना)
