Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

1. Word: Recede (घटना)

  • Pronunciation: ri-seed/ रिसीड
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: go or move back or further away from a previous position
  • Synonyms: retreat, withdraw, diminish, lessen, retire, subside
  • Antonyms: approach, advance, increase, emerge, rise
  • Usage in a Sentence: After the waters recede, extensive lagoons and marshes are formed as the ground gradually dries out.

2. Word: Extradite (प्रत्यर्पण करना)

  • Pronunciation: ek-struh-dahyt/ एक्स्ट्रडाइट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: hand over (a person accused or convicted of a crime) to the jurisdiction of the foreign state in which the crime was committed.
  • Synonyms: deliver, deport, surrender
  • Antonyms: shelter, discharge, protect
  • Usage in a sentence: The man was arrested last Wednesday and will be extradited to Utah to face charges alleged in the warrant.

3. Word: Unprecedented (अद्वितीय)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-pres-i-den-tid/ अन्प्रेसिडेन्टिड

  • Meaning: never done or known before.
  • Synonyms: unparalleled, record-breaking, remarkable
  • Antonyms: traditional, familiar, typical
  • Usage in a sentence: An unprecedented change has been the keynote of the electronic revolution.

4. Word: Tactic (कार्यनीति)

  • Pronunciation: tak-tik/ टैक्टिक
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: an action or strategy carefully planned to achieve a specific end.
  • Synonyms: plan, strategy, ploy
  • Antonyms: chance
  • Usage in a sentence: The players were upset when they failed to pull off their highly strategic tactic.

5. Word: Rein (नियंत्रण)

  • Pronunciation: reyn/ रेन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning
    a. a long, narrow strap attached at one end to a horse's bit, typically used in pairs to guide or check a horse in riding or driving. (Noun)
    b. the power to direct and control. (Noun)
    c. check or guide (a horse) by pulling on its reins. (Verb)
    d. keep under control; restrain. (Verb)

7. Word: Ransack (लूट लेना)

  • Synonyms: scrutinize, inquiry

9. Phrase: Fan the flames (उत्तेजित करना)

  • Pronunciation: फैन द फ्लेम्स
  • Meaning: cause an emotion such as anger or hatred to become stronger.
  • Synonyms: add fuel to the fire, stir up, incite, provoke, excite, aggravate
  • Antonyms: calm, soothe
  • Usage in a sentence: There are several specific and new issues that are fanning the flames in this dispute.

10. Word: Provocative (उकसाने वाला)

  • Pronunciation: pruh-vok-uh-tiv/ प्रोवाकटिव

  • Meaning
    a. causing anger or another strong reaction, especially deliberately.
    b. intended or intending to arouse sexual desire or interest.
