Over the last couple of years, the English section of the competitive exams has given good surprises. You must have encountered one or more new types of questions in almost every exam you appear for. Many of these questions exclusively check your vocabulary skills. So, apart from enhancing your reading, writing, and speaking skills, a sound grip on vocabulary helps you score better in examinations. 

 

 

Reading is one of the best ways to boost your vocabulary. As you read a piece of writing, you come across new words that you might not have come across before. So, we must always try to inculcate a habit of reading.

1. Word: Discriminatory (पक्षपाती)

  • Pronunciation: dih-skrim-uh-nuh-tawr-ee/ डिस्क्रिमनटॉरी
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: making or showing an unfair or prejudicial distinction between different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
  • Synonyms: prejudiced, biased, unfair
  • Antonyms: impartial, fair, unprejudiced
  • Usage in a sentence: The government enacted laws to protect women from discriminatory employment practices.

2. Word: Dispel (दूर करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-spel / डिस्पेल

  • Meaning: make (a doubt, feeling, or belief) disappear.
  • Synonyms: disperse, banish, disappear
  • Antonyms: accumulate, assemble, gather
  • Usage in a sentence: The President is attempting to dispel the notion that he has neglected the economy.

3. Word: Quell (शांत करना)

  • Pronunciation: kwel/ क्वेल
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: put an end to (a rebellion or other disorder), typically by the use of force.
  • Synonyms: suppress, subdue
  • Antonyms: encourage, provoke
  • Usage in a sentence: The President took immediate steps to quell the uprising.

4. Word: Persecution (उत्पीड़न)

  • Pronunciation: pur-si-kyoo-shuh n/ पर्सक्यूशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning
    a. hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs; oppression.
    b. persistent annoyance or harassment.
  • Synonyms: abuse, oppression, torment, harassment, cruelty
  • Antonyms: protection, stimulation, charity, benevolence
  • Usage in a Sentence: The marginalization and persecution of the Roma and Sinti did not end with the war’s conclusion.

5. Word: Asylum (आश्रय)

  • Pronunciation: uh-sahy-luhm/ असाइलम
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. the protection granted by a state to someone who has left their home country as a political refugee.
    b. an institution for the care of people who are mentally ill.
  • Synonyms: refuge, shelter, sanctuary
  • Antonyms: threat, hazard, evict
  • Usage in a sentence: The number of people seeking asylum in the United Kingdom has risen sharply.

6. Word: Repatriation (देश-प्रत्यावर्तन)

  • Pronunciation: ree-pey-tree-eyt-ion/ रीपैट्रीऐशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning
    a. the return of someone to their own country.
    b. the sending of money back to one's own country.
  • Synonyms: return, restoration
  • Antonyms: exile, expulsion
  • Usage in a Sentence: It is illogical to oppose the repatriation of economic migrants.

7. Word: Notion (धारणा)

  • Pronunciation: noh-shuh n/ नोशन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning
    a.  conception of or belief about something.
    b. an impulse or desire, especially one of a whimsical kind
  • Synonyms: idea, opinion, impulse, thought, inclination
  • Antonyms: accident, accuracy, truth
  • Usage in a Sentence: She was prepossessed with the notion of her own superiority.

8. Word: Clamour (चीत्कार/ शोर मचाना)

  • Pronunciation: klam-er/ क्लैमर
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. a loud and confused noise, especially that of people shouting.
    b. (of a group of people) shout loudly and insistently.
  • Synonyms: commotion, uproar, din

9. Word: Strident (कर्कश)

  • Pronunciation: strahyd-nt/ स्ट्राइडन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. (of a sound) loud and harsh; grating.
    b. presenting a point of view, especially a controversial one, in an excessively forceful way.
  • Synonyms: harsh, shrill, raucous, penetrating, piercing
  • Antonyms: soft, melodious, mild, gentle
  • Usage in a Sentence: The strident tone in his voice revealed his anger.

10. Phrase: Fend off (रोकना)

  • Pronunciation: फेन्ड ऑफ 
  • Meaning: to defend oneself against (someone or something)
  • Synonyms: repel, reject, ward off, repulse
  • Antonyms: let in, interact, approve, accept a defeat
  • Usage in a Sentence: They have had to fend off allegations of voter fraud.
