Stages of the ESE Exam
The IES Examination constitutes the following three stages with a total of 1300 Marks:
Stage 1: Objective Type
- Paper 1- General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper(common to all disciplines)
- 2 hours duration, 200 Maximum marks
- Paper 2- Engineering discipline-specific paper
- 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks
Stage 2: Subjective Type
- Paper 1-Engineering discipline-specific paper
- 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks
- Paper 2- Engineering discipline-specific paper
- 3 hours duration, 300 Maximum marks
Stage 3: Personality Test/ Interview
- 200 Maximum marks
The written examination is of 1100 marks and the personal interview conducted is of 200 marks making a total of 1300 marks.

PAPER I
- Engineering Mathematics: Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, Numerical methods for the solution of non-linear algebraic equations, maxima and minima, Line, Surface and Volume Integrals, Fourier series, initial and boundary value problems, complex variables, Taylor and Laurent series, probability, Sampling theorem, Normal and Poisson distributions.
- Electrical Materials: Crystal structures and defects, ceramic materials, insulating materials, ferrites, ferromagnetic materials and components, Photo-conductivity, and Superconductors.
- Electric Circuits and Fields: KCL, KVL, Node and Mesh analysis, Thevenin, and Maximum Power Transfer theorems, transient response of DC and AC networks, two-port networks, three-phase circuits, electric field and potential due to point, line, plane and spherical charge distributions, Ampere law, dielectrics, and Maxwell equations.
- Electrical and Electronic Measurements: Bridges and potentiometers, measurement of voltage, current, power, energy, and power factor, digital voltmeters and multi-meters, oscilloscopes, error analysis, and Transducers.
- Computer Fundamentals: Number systems, Memory Organisation, data representation, operating system, and networking.
- Basic Electronics Engineering: Basics of Semiconductor diodes and transistors, Junction, and field effect transistors (BJT, FET, and MOSFETs), oscillators, and feedback amplifiers.
PAPER-II
Here are the important topics for ESE Electrical Engineering Mains 2023 for Paper 2:
- Analog and Digital Electronics: Operational amplifiers, multiplexers, multi-vibrators, A/D and D/A converters, simple active filters; Modulation and demodulation, noise and bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, sampling, frequency and time domain multiplexing.
- Systems and Signal Processing: Representation of continuous and discrete-time signals, shifting and scaling operations, linear, time-invariant and causal systems, Z transforms, Discrete Fourier, transform, and FFT.
- Control Systems: Transfer function, signal flow graphs, Routh-Hurwitz criterion, Nyquist techniques, Bode plots, root loci, lag, lead and lead-lag compensation, stability analysis, state transition matrix, PID and industrial controllers.
