World Music Day History
The first International Music Day was celebrated on the day of Summer Solstice in 1982. The event took place in Paris at Fete de la Musique. Jack Lang, a French politician, conceptualised the idea of commemorating World Music Day. He came up with this idea with Maurice Fleuret, a music composer and a radio producer. He was also known to be a music journalist.
Both of them were an important part of the French Ministry of Culture when they came up with this great idea of celebrating World Music Day. Jack Lang came forward with a request for Maurice where he asked him to take up the position of Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture.
Maurice then got busy studying cultural habits around music, where he came to know that one out of every two men in France plays a musical instrument. He then came up with bringing people out of their homes on Summer Solstice and then celebrating the event as World Music Day.
