Both of them were an important part of the French Ministry of Culture when they came up with this great idea of celebrating World Music Day. Jack Lang came forward with a request for Maurice where he asked him to take up the position of Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture.

Maurice then got busy studying cultural habits around music, where he came to know that one out of every two men in France plays a musical instrument. He then came up with bringing people out of their homes on Summer Solstice and then celebrating the event as World Music Day.
