The National Film Festival is a ceremony awarding the best personalities contributing to films and crafts. This festival also serves to encourage ordinary people t5o watch award-winning films that are not only entertaining but also educational.

The Indian Government appoints a special jury board to select the final winners from a pool of applicants. The awards are presented to the winners in an auspicious ceremony in Delhi at Vigyan Bhavan. The president of India offers the awards to the winners.

When did National Film Festival Start?

On October 10, 1954, the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi hosted India's first National Film Festival. The National Film Festival dedicates the national film awards to a variety of existing social and cultural challenges in the country. The challenges include early and forced marriages, migrant workers' sufferings, domestic abuse, nationalism, and many other topics.

The Indian government took the initiative to organise the ceremony to reward films produced throughout the country on a national level and to foster the advancement of Indian art and culture. The Indian Directorate of Cinema Festivals has been in charge of the program, as well as other significant film festivals in India, since 1973.

National Film Festival Objective

The National Film Festival is celebrated across the nation to recognise the country's artistic and intellectual brilliance. It organises a national film awards ceremony to encourage every creative person associated with the film industry of India to recognise their distinctive contribution.

The festival also aims to spread movies among the common people that talk about social and cultural challenges. Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury won the national award in 2017 for making the film 'Pink'. This movie showed the critical challenges that women face in our society along with raising awareness among people.

National Film Festival - 67th Film Awards

The last National Film Festival and the 67th national film awards were celebrated last year. It selected winners from the 2019 entries as the ceremony was delayed because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The following list describes the most prominent awards:

  1. Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea, a Malayali language film, was named Best Feature Film of 2021.

  4. Mr Naga Vishal was named Best Child Artist in 2021 for his Tamil film KD.
  5. The Water Burial, directed by Santanu Sen, won the prize for Best Film on Environment in 2021.
  6. The superb documentary film Small Scale Societies received the Special Jury Award for 2021.
  7. Wild Karnataka, a Kannada film, won the award for Best Exploration Film in 2021.
  8. The inaugural feature film, Elephants Do Remember, won the award for Best Biographical Film in 2021.

The National Film Festival encourages filmmakers and other artists to come up with new concepts and ideas to communicate more about societal challenges. The common people also get to explore and consume content that entertaining well as educational.
