The Paralympic Games, sometimes known as the Paralympics, is a multi-sport international competition for competitors with various disabilities. The event is held every two years, almost immediately following the Olympic Games. Winter and Summer Paralympic Games are the two types of games. The International Paralympic Committee oversees the Paralympic Games (IPC). The International Paralympic Committee

The first Paralympics were held in 1948, with a modest assembly of British World War II veterans. With thousands of athletes from 100 nations, it has grown into one of the major international sporting events. Paralympians desire to be treated equally to non-disabled Olympic athletes, but there is a significant budget discrepancy between the Paralympic and Olympic Games.

In 1960, the first Paralympic Games were held in Rome. The Games drew 400 athletes from 23 countries. At first, it was solely open to athletes who used wheelchairs. Athletes with different disabilities were also included in the 1976 Summer Paralympic Games.

India's Paralympics Medal

India Paralympics medal tally totalled 19 medals. India won 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals in the Paralympics 2020. India made history with its best-ever medal count of 19 at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, including five gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals. Indian para-athletes won 19 medals in five sports, including shooting, archery, badminton, etc.

In the 11 editions of the Paralympic Games since their inception in 1960, India has won 31 medals, including nine gold, 12 silver, and ten bronze, with more than half of them coming at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

Shooter Avani Lekhara, shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar, javelin thrower Sumit Antil, shooter Manish Narwal, etc., are the Indian gold medalists at the Tokyo Paralympics. Also, Avani Lekhara is the 1st Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics.
