World Tourism Day: History, Significance, Theme

World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27th September each year. It is observed to raise people's awareness of the importance of tourism and its contribution to the economic growth of the country or region.

Countries around the world, large and small, rely in some way or the other on travel and tourism for economic survival and to emphasize cultural, social, and political values.

World Tourism Day History

On 27th September 1970, a special rally was held in Mexico City by the International Union of Official Travel Organisation (IUOTO), and the legislation of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was approved. The UNWTO decree adopted the World Tourism Milestone on this day.

Towards the end of September 1979, UNWTO decided to introduce World Tourism Day. It was first celebrated on 27th September 1980.

According to UNWTO, this date is suitable for World Tourism Day as it marks the end of the peak of the Northern Hemisphere tourism season and the beginning of the Southern Hemisphere tourism season. This day is enthusiastically celebrated under a different theme each year.

World Tourism Day Themes

The theme of World Tourism Day 2021 was "Tourism for Inclusive Growth." This day focuses on tourism for comprehensive growth.

The theme of World Tourism Day 2020 was "Tourism and Rural Development". This day focused on the ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities to rural communities.

The theme of World Tourism Day 2019 was "Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all." It focused on creating more and better jobs, especially for young people and women.

The theme of World Tourism Day 2018 was "Tourism and Cultural Protection" and 2017 was "Sustainable Tourism – Tools for Development".

World Tourism Day - India

The celebration of World Tourism Day took place in Delhi, raising awareness of the challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and how the tourism industry can address these challenges.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), digital advances and innovations are part of the solution to the challenge of managing continued growth in the more sustainable and responsible tourism sector.

The fact that tourism has become a continuously growing and developing industry and that various attractive and new tourist destinations are emerging all over the world cannot be ignored. It is now the main source of income for developing countries.

The tourism industry faced the most severe effects of the pandemic and multiple lockdowns. C0VID-19 had great social and economic implications. Resuming tourism will help revitalize the economy and income.
