XA 2017 Vocabulary Preparation

(1) Blithe 

Meaning : showing a casual and cheerful indifference considered to be callous or improper

Usage : Mr. Shaw had a blithe disregard for the rules of the road.

(2) Vehement 

Meaning : showing strong feeling; forceful, passionate, or intense.

Usage : He was a vehement opponent of the new law.

(3) Retribution

Meaning : punishment inflicted on someone as vengeance for a wrong or criminal act.

Usage : I was quite ill afterward, and I wonder if retribution also overtook the turkey

(4) Recrimination

Meaning : an accusation in response to one from someone else.

Usage : He said only one thing, ' there are no tears, no recriminations'.

(5) Elicit

Meaning : evoke or draw out (a reaction, answer, or fact) from someone.

Usage : I tried to elicit a smile from Joanna.
