MAT Analysis - September 2018

By Vijay Jha|Updated : September 16th, 2018

It was a typical MAT and there was no departure from the way MAT has been for quite a while now.

People from gradeup team took the test (CBT, 0230-0500 pm slot) and interacted with many aspirants too.

The salient features of the test is provided in the table below:

ParticularsDetails
Number of questions 200 (5 sections of 40 questions each)
Time allotted: 150 minutes (no sectional time limit)
Number of options per question4
Marking pattern (raw score)1 mark for a correct response and -0.25 marks for an incorrect one, no marks for questions not attempted
Questions formatAll 200 questions in MCQ format
Sectional constraintsNot any. Students could attempt any section at any time during the test.
Good AttemptsGood number of overall attempts (excluding the section on Indian & Global Environment): 90-100

Language Comprehension: 40 questions

  • This section had 4 passages of 5 questions each. The section had 20 other questions from these topics: Synonyms, Antonyms, Sentence Completion (double blank), Idioms/Phrases, Summary of a short passage, One word substitution and Para-jumbles.
  • The RC passages were easy to read and comprehend. The passages were on Demonetization, Fibroscan (an equipment to diagnose liver cirrhosis), Management of Hazardous Material, etc.
  • Some RC questions had 3 statements in them and students had to choose the correct statements (as per the passage); these were, probably, the only moderately difficult questions in RC.
  • A few words which the test expected students to know were: Pivotal, Exodus, etc.
  • It was not difficult to attempt around 30 questions here by giving the section 30-35 minutes.

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning: 40 questions

  • This section had 4 sets- of 5 questions each- of Logical Reasoning questions. The other 20 questions were from the topics: Strong/Weak arguments, Course of Action, Coding-Decoding, Syllogism, etc.
  • Most of these questions were easy. A few sets of Logical Reasoning had become difficult because of some error in the question itself!
  • It was possible to attempt around 25-30 questions by giving 35 minutes to this section.

Mathematical Skills: 40 questions

  • This section had the preponderance of Arithmetic in it. Almost all topics (Mixture & Solutions, Simple & Compound Interest, Time-Speed-Distance, Percentages, Profit-Loss-Discount, etc.) of Arithmetic were present.
  • It also had questions from Probability, Combinatorics, Mensuration, Linear Equations, etc.
  • It did not have many calculation-intensive questions. One well prepared student should have been able to attempt around 30 questions by giving 45 minutes to this section.
  • Some questions in this section had very close options. This was probably the only section in the test which had a few tricky questions.

Data Analysis and Sufficiency: 40 questions

  • This section had questions on Graphs, Pie-charts, Bar-Diagrams, etc. Most of these questions were easy to do.
  • It was not difficult to attempt 20-25 questions by giving 25-30 minutes to this section.

Indian and Global Environment: 40 questions

  • Most of the students are aware that this section is not counted to generate the overall scaled score in MAT and hence they do NOT attempt it.
  • There are very few B-Schools which look at the score (given separately) of this section. Looking at the factual nature of the section, it is not difficult to complete it in 10 minutes.
  • This section was a mixture of questions on Static General Knowledge and Current Affairs. A score of 15 may be considered good here.

gradeup wishes all the students well for the results to be announced in about a week from now.

We shall be bringing the analysis of the very first slot of NMAT to you on October 4, 2018.

Happy Prepping!
