Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 6th December, 2021

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command over Vocabulary.  3. Word: Afflict (कष्ट पहुँचाना)

  • Pronunciation: uh-flikt/अफ्लिक्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: (of a problem or illness) cause pain or trouble to; affect adversely.
  • Synonyms:  trouble, distress
  • Antonyms: comfort, soothe
  • Usage in a Sentence: The better part of the western world was afflicted by the plague.

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    provide or give (a service, help, etc.).

5. Word: Tinker (ठीक करना)

  • Pronunciation: ting-ker/टिंगकर 
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: attempt to repair or improve something in a casual or desultory way.
  • Synonyms: mess around, meddle, dabble
  • Antonyms: buster, improve, do well
  • Use in a Sentence: Don't tinker with my television.

6. Word: Din (शोर)

  • Pronunciation: din/डिन
  • Meaning:
    a.a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise (Noun) 
    b. make a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise, make (someone) learn or remember an idea by constant repetition (Verb)
  • Synonyms:  uproar, commotion, cacophony, babel, hubbub, tumult, instil

  • Meaning: inflicting or intended as punishment.
  • Synonyms: harsh, corrective
  • Antonyms: rehabilitative, rewarding
  • Usage in a Sentence: The government is expected to take punitive steps against offenders.

  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: violent or extreme disorder; chaos.
  • Pronunciationmey-hem/ मैहेम
  • Synonyms: chaos, disorder, commotion
  • Antonyms: calm, harmony, discipline
  • Use in a Sentence: There was complete mayhem after the explosion.

  • Pronunciation: shuhn/शन

  • Meaning: persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution.
  • Synonyms: evade, dodge
  • Antonyms: accept, embrace
  • Usage in a Sentence: They wear simple clothes and shun modern inventions.
