Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 2nd Oct 2023

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Proscribe (निषिद् ध करना)

  • Pronunciation: proh-skrahyb/प्रोस्क्राइब
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. forbid, especially by law.
    b. denounce or condemn.
    c. outlaw (someone).
  • Synonyms: prohibit, ban, criticize, censure, exclude, ostracize
  • Antonyms: allow, permit, include, approve
  • Usage in a Sentence: The Act proscribes discrimination on the grounds of race.

2. Word: Setback (असफलता)

  • Pronunciation: set-bak/ सेट्बैक
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a reversal or check in progress.
  • Synonyms: problem, difficulty, complication, disappointment 
  • Antonyms: positive outcome, success, breakthrough
  • Usage in a sentence: The December elections were a major setback for the party. 

 3. Word: Protract (खींचना)

  • Pronunciation: proh-trakt/प्रोट्रैक्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. to draw out or lengthen, especially in time; extend the duration of; prolong
    b. Anatomy. to extend or protrude
    c. (in surveying, mathematics, etc.) to plot and draw (lines) with a scale and a protractor
  • Synonyms: prolong, extend, draw out, lengthen
  • Antonyms: contract, curtail, abbreviate
  • Usage in a sentence: I have no desire to protract the process.

4. WordEncounter (मिलनामुठभेड़)

  • Pronunciation: en-koun-ter/ एन्काउन्टर
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. unexpectedly be faced with or experience (something hostile or difficult). [Verb]
    b. a confrontation or unpleasant struggle. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: meet, experience, find
  • Antonyms: avoid, elude, dodge
  • Usage in a sentence: His encounter with the wild dog had completely unnerved him.

5. Word: Infirmity (कमजोरी)

  • Pronunciation: in-fur-mi-tee/ इन्फर्मिटी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: physical or mental weakness.
  • Synonyms: weakness, frailty, ailment, illness
  • Antonyms: strength, power, vigour, energy
  • Usage in Sentence: His infirmity made it difficult to focus on anything other than how much pain he was in.

6. Word: Heft (महत्त्व)

  • Pronunciation: heft/ हेफ्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. weight; heaviness:
    b. significance or importance.
    c. Archaic. the bulk or the main part.
  • Synonyms: heave, lift, ponderousness
  • Antonyms: adjunct, supplement, addendum
  • Usage in a sentence: It was a rather flimsy chair, without much heft to it.

7. WordBeget (उपजाना)

  • Pronunciation: bih-get/ बिगेट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: (especially of a man) bring (a child) into existence by the process of reproduction.
  • Synonyms: engender, generate, produce
  • Antonyms: abolish, destroy, demolish
  • Usage in a Sentence: On some planets orbiting these stellar furnaces skies beget clouds, oceans fill with water and, sometimes, life begins.

8. Word: Insurgent (विद्रोही/बागी)

  • Pronunciation: in-sur-juhnt/ इन्सर्जन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. a person fighting against a government or invading force; a rebel or revolutionary. [Noun]
    b. rising in active revolt. [Adjective]
  • Synonyms: rebel, recusant, revolutionary
  • Antonyms: obedient, loyal, loyalist
  • Usage in a sentence: It was also a fight to consolidate his position within the insurgents.

9. Word: Entrench (मजबूत स्थिति बनाना)

  • Pronunciation: en-trench/एन्ट्रेन्च
  • Part of Speech
  • Meaning:
    a. to firmly establish something, especially an idea or a problem, so that it cannot be changed
    b. to dig trenches for defensive purposes around (oneself, a military position, etc.)
    c. to encroach; trespass; infringe (usually followed by on or upon)
  • Synonyms: encroach, embed, root, fix
  • Antonyms: remove, displace, eject
  • Usage in a sentence: The government's main task was to prevent inflation from entrenching itself.

10Word: Quixotic (अवास्तविक)

  • Pronunciation: kwik-sot-ik/क्विक्साटिक
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: extremely idealistic; unrealistic and impractical.
  • Synonyms: visionary, dreamy, delusive, idealistic
  • Antonyms: pragmatic, realistic, mundane
  • Usage in a Sentence: This project is a vast, exciting, and may be quixotic.
