Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Calamitous (अनर्थकारी)

  • Pronunciation: kuh-lam-i-tuhs/कलैमिटस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. (of events) having extremely unfortunate or dire consequences; bringing ruin
  • Synonyms: disastrous, ruinous, catastrophic

  • Meaning: the action or fact of spreading something, especially information, widely.
  • Synonyms: distribution, circulation
  • Antonyms: gathering, collection
  • Usage in a sentence: The dissemination of music by radio and gramophone record permeated the whole country and every social stratum.

  • Pronunciationten-yoo-uhs/ टेन्यूअस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. very weak or slight
    b. very slender or fine; insubstantial
  • Synonyms: insubstantial, flimsy, weak, fragile, dubious, thin, slender, delicate
  • Antonyms: substantial, thick, stable, healthy, significant
  • Usage in a Sentence: He could demonstrate only a tenuous claim to ownership.

4. Word: Incumbent (अवलंबी)

  • Pronunciation: in-kuhm-buh nt/ इन्कम्बन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. necessary for (someone) as a duty or responsibility. [Adjective]
    b. the holder of an office or post. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: necessary, tenured, compulsory, officeholder
  • Antonyms: optional, unnecessary
  • Usage in a sentence: It is incumbent upon all users of this equipment to familiarize themselves with the safety procedure.

5. Word: Rebuke (फटकार)

  • Pronunciation: Re-bew-k/रिब्यूक
  • Part of Speech: Noun, verb
  • Meaning - express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behaviour or actions (Verb)
    an expression of sharp disapproval or criticism (Noun)
  • Synonyms - censure, disapproval
  • Antonyms - approval, endorsement
  • Usage in a sentence - His bad manners earned him a sharp rebuke.

6. Word: Crumble (टुकड़े टुकड़े करना)

  • Pronunciation: kruhm-buhl/ क्रम्बल
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: break or fall apart into small fragments, especially as part of a process of deterioration.
  • Synonyms: collapse, disintegrate, decay
  • Antonyms: build, integrate

  • Synonyms: anxiety, anguish, fear, distress, dread

  • Usage in a Sentence: This story lacks the typical angst and desperation.

9.  Word: Nadir (निम्नतम स्तर)

  • Pronunciationney-der/ नेडीर
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the lowest or most unsuccessful point in a situation
  • Synonyms: bottom, base, sole, underneath
  • Antonyms: acme, zenith, peak, apex, summit
  • Usage in a Sentence: The relationship between the two countries reached a nadir in the 1920s.

10. Word: Spike (भेदना)

  • Pronunciation: spahyk/ स्पाइक
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. a thin, pointed piece of metal, wood, or another rigid material. [Noun]
    b. impale on or pierce with a sharp point. [Verb]
  • Synonyms: spear, pin, impale, fasten
  • Antonyms: detach, release, unfasten, loosen
  • Usage in a Sentence: The murder weapon was a frozen spike and it melted in the steam room.
