Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 27th Sep 2023

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. WordInnocuous (क्षति न पहुंचानेवाला)

  • Pronunciation: ih-nok-yoo-uh s/ इनाक्यूअस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: not harmful or offensive.
  • Synonyms:  harmless, safe, non-dangerous, non-poisonous, non-toxic, innocent
  • Antonyms:  harmful, obnoxious, injurious, pernicious
  • Usage in a sentence: Even innocuous substances can sometimes register a positive result in a drug test.

2. Word - Mooted (विचार करना)

  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: raised (a question or topic) for discussion; suggested (an idea or possibility).
  • Pronunciation: मूटिड
  • Synonyms: debated, discussed, argued
  • Antonyms: taken
  • Use in a Sentence: It's a moot point whether Rohan or Sohan is better player.

3. WordEfficacy (प्रभावोत्पादकता)

  • Pronunciation: ef-i-kuh-see/एफिकैसी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the ability to produce a desired or intended result.
  • Synonyms: effectiveness, potency
  • Antonyms: failure, feebleness
  • Use in a Sentence: Fortunately, the medicine had the efficacy to reduce the amount of pain Vanshi was feeling.

4. Word: Regime (शासन-पद्धति)

  • Pronunciation: ruh-zheem/रैश़ीम
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. a mode or system of rule or government
    b. a ruling or prevailing system
    c. a government in power
    d. the period during which a particular government or ruling system is in power
    e. a particular way of operating or organizing a system
  • Synonyms: system, government, scheme, authorities
  • Antonyms: chaos, disorder, anarchy
  • Usage in a sentence: He urged governments worldwide to break diplomatic ties with the new regime.

5. Word: Bonhomie (मिलनसारिता)

  • Pronunciation: bon-uh-mee/ बानमी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: cheerful friendliness; geniality.
  • Synonyms: affability, amiability, sociability
  • Antonyms: aloofness, coldness, ferocity
  • Usage in Sentence: There was a casual bonhomie between the actors at rehearsals.

6. Word: Gambit (चाल)

  • Pronunciation: gam-bit/ गैम्बिट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: an act or remark that is calculated to gain an advantage, especially at the outset of a situation.
  • Synonyms: ploy, stratagem, artifice, tactic
  • Antonyms: good faith, frankness
  • Usage in a Sentence: His opening gambit at the debate was a direct attack on the government policy.

7. Word: Unpalatable (अरुचिकर)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-pal-uh-tuh-buhl/ अन्पैलटबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. not palatable; unpleasant to the taste.
    b. disagreeable or unacceptable; obnoxious:
  • Synonyms: distasteful, unsavory, unpleasant

  • Usage in a sentence: His unpalatable behavior managed to irk the teacher. 

8. Word: Oblivious (अनजान)

  • Meaning: not aware of or concerned about what is happening around one.
  • Synonyms: unaware, unconscious, heedless, unmindful, ignorant
  • Antonyms: aware, conscious, alert
  • Usage in a sentence: Cara thought the wine would make Karen seem more oblivious to what the kids were getting into.

9.  WordGauge (अनुमान/आंकना)

  • Pronunciation: geyj/ गैज
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a) the thickness, size, or capacity of something, especially as a standard measure, in particular (Noun)
    b) a tool for checking whether something conforms to a desired dimension. (Noun)
    c) estimate or determine the amount, level, or volume of.
  • Synonyms: measure, evaluate, compute
  • Antonyms: guess
  • Use in a Sentence: You should use a thermometer to gauge the temperature.

10. Word: Fallout (नतीजा)

  • Pronunciation: fawl-out/फॉलाउट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. the settling to the ground of airborne particles ejected into the atmosphere from the earth by explosions, eruptions, forest fires, etc., especially such settling from nuclear explosions (radioactive fallout )
    b. the particles themselves. Compare rainout
    c. an unexpected or incidental effect, outcome, or product
    d. effects; results
  • Synonyms: effect, impact, repercussions
  • Antonyms: cause, reason
  • Usage in a sentence: A number of cancer deaths are caused by fallout from weapons testing.
