Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Defer (टालना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-fur/ डेफेर
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: put off (an action or event) to a later time; postpone.
  • Synonyms: adjourn, delay, hold over
  • Antonyms: accelerate, hasten, expedite
  • Use in Sentence: The committee wishes to defer their decision until next week.

2. Word: Distress (दुःख होना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-stres/डिस्ट्रेस
  • Part of Speech:  Noun
  • Meaning: 

        a. extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain. [Noun]

        b. cause (someone) anxiety, sorrow, or pain. [Verb]

  • Synonyms:  anguish, suffering
  • Antonyms: comfort, pleasure
  • Use in a Sentence: Jealousy causes distress and painful emotions.

3. WordAdjudication (अभिनिर्णय )

  • Pronunciation: uh-joo-di-key-shuh n/ अड्जूडिकेशॅन
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the action or process of adjudicating (a formal judgement on a disputed matter)
  • Synonyms: decision, verdict, determination
  • Antonyms: amnesty, beginning
  • Usage in a Sentence: The case was referred to a higher court for adjudication.

4. Word: Inevitable (अनिवार्य)

  • Pronunciation: in-ev-i-tuh-buh l/ इनेविटबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. certain to happen; unavoidable. [Adjective]
    b. a situation that is unavoidable. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: unavoidable, necessary, ineluctable
  • Antonyms: avoidable, preventable, evitable
  • Usage in a sentence: Accidents are the inevitable result of driving too fast.

Word: Quest (अनुसंधान)

  • Pronunciation: kwest/क्वेस्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a long search for something that is difficult to find, or an attempt to achieve something difficult
  • Synonyms: search, pursuit, hunt, mission, seeking
  • Antonyms: retreat
  • Usage in a sentence: Nothing will stop them in their quest for truth. 

6. WordGenocide (जातिसंहार)

  • Pronunciationjen-uh-sahyd
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group.
  • Synonyms: mass murder, extermination, annihilation, massacre
  • Antonyms: peace, toleration, amity, endurance
  • Usage in a Sentence: Lawmakers passed a motion recognising the Ottoman slaughter of Armenians in 1915 as a genocide.

7. Word: Prejudice (पक्षपात)

  • Pronunciation: prej-uh-dis/प्रेजडिस
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason (Noun)
    b. any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable (Noun)
    c. unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group (Noun)
    d. damage or injury; detriment (Noun)
    e. someone or something that prejudices you influences you unfairly so that you form an unreasonable opinion about something (Verb)
  • Synonyms: bias, partiality, influence, discrimination
  • Antonyms: tolerance, fairness, justice, equity
  • Usage in a sentence: Laws against racial prejudice must be strictly enforced.

8. Word: Vandalise (तहस नहस करना)

  • Pronunciation: van-dl-ahyz/व़ैन्डलाइज़्
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to intentionally damage property belonging to other people
  • Synonyms: ruin, damage, sabotage
  • Antonyms: aid, mend, refine
  • Usage in a sentence: When I got back, my car had been vandalized.

9.  Word: Manifest (स्पष्ट करना)

  • Pronunciation: /मैनफेस्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective, Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. clear or obvious to the eye or mind. [Adjective]
    b. show (a quality or feeling) by one's acts or appearance; demonstrate. [Verb]
  • Synonyms: evident, exhibit
  • Antonyms: vague, obscure
  • Usage in a Sentence: You manifest what you believe, not what you want.

10. Word: Sporadic (छिट पुट)

  • Pronunciation: spuh-rad-ik/स्पोरैडिक
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. occurring at irregular intervals or only in a few places; scattered or isolated.
  • Synonyms: occasional, infrequent, irregular, periodical
  • Antonyms: frequent, constant, ceaseless, seasonal
  • Usage in a Sentence: There were reports of sporadic fighting in the streets.
