Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Flawed (दोषपूर्ण)

  • Pronunciation: flawd/ फ्लॉड 
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: having or characterized by a fundamental weakness or imperfection.
  • Synonyms: unsound, defective, faulty, distorted, inaccurate
  • Antonyms: sound, flawless, faultless, perfect, unblemished
  • Usage in a sentence: This approach is even more flawed than the first.

2. Word: Collegium (अधिशासी मंडल)

  • Pronunciation: kuh-lee-jee-uh m/ कलीजीअम
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: an organization for people who have similar interests or who do similar work, especially in a university.
  • Synonyms: panel, bench
  • Usage in a sentence: This collegium continued to exist till the time of Alaric.

3. Word: Sanction (अनुमोदन)

  • Pronunciation: sangk-shuhn/ सैंगक्शन 
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning: 
    a. a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule. (Noun)
    b. official permission or approval for an action. (Noun)
    c. give official permission or approval for (an action). (Verb)
  • Synonyms: approve, endorse, support
  • Antonyms: disapprove, refuse, forbid
  • Usage in a sentence: The church refused to sanction the king's second marriage.

4. Word: Standstill (ठहराव)

  • Pronunciationstand-stil/ स्टैन्ड्स्टिल
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a situation or condition in which there is no movement or activity at all.
  • Synonyms: deadlock, stalemate, impasse, dead-end
  • Antonyms: advance, progress, journey, synergy
  • Usage in a Sentence: The entire city came to a standstill after the transportation department declared a day-long strike.

5. Word: Inevitable (अनिवार्य)

  • Pronunciation: in-ev-i-tuh-buh l/ इनेविटबल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective, Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. certain to happen; unavoidable. [Adjective]
    b. a situation that is unavoidable. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: unavoidable, necessary, ineluctable
  • Antonyms: avoidable, preventable, evitable
  • Usage in a sentence: Accidents are the inevitable result of driving too fast.

6. Word: Reiterate (दोहराना)

  • Pronunciation: ree-it-uh-reyt/ रीइटरैट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity.
  • Synonyms: repeat, restate, renew
  • Antonyms: conceal, repudiate, contradict
  • Usage in a sentence: We would like to reiterate that confirmation copy will be coming by mail soon.

7. Word: Testy (चिड़चिड़ा)

  • Pronunciationtes-tee/ टेस्टी
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: easily irritated; impatient and somewhat bad-tempered.
  • Synonyms: irritable, cranky, petulant, peevish
  • Antonyms: pleasant, amiable, happy, agreeable
  • Usage in a Sentence: The coworkers would be easier to get along with if she weren't so testy all the time.

8. Word: Chastise (दंड देना)

  • Pronunciation: chas-tahyz/ चैस्टाइज़
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. rebuke or reprimand severely.
    b. punish, especially by beating.
  • Synonyms: castigate, punish, scold, penalize
  • Antonyms: promote, pardon, excuse, comfort
  • Usage in a Sentence: The waiter was chastised for forgetting the customer's order.

9. Word: Standoff (ड्रॉ)

  • Pronunciation: stand-awf/ स्टैन्डॉफ
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a deadlock between two equally matched opponents in a dispute or conflict
  • Synonyms: tie, logjam, standstill, impasse
  • Antonyms: decision, inseparable, intimacy
  • Usage in a Sentence: The political standoff led to a six-month delay in passing this year's budget.

10. Word: Disrupt (भंग करना)

  • Pronunciation: dis-ruhpt/ डिस्रप्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning
    a. interrupt (an event, activity, or process) by causing a disturbance or problem.
    b. drastically alter or destroy the structure of.
  • Synonyms: disturb, interrupt, upset, unsettle 
  • Antonyms: organize, arrange, ready, order
  • Usage in a Sentence: The weather disrupted our travel plans.
