Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 20th Sep 2023

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. 1. Word: Unravel (सुलझाना)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-rav-uh l/अन्रैवल

  • Meaning: 
    a. to separate or disentangle the threads
    b. to free from complication or difficulty
    c. (Informal) to take apart; undo; destroy
  • Synonyms: solve, disentangle, untangle, resolve

2. Word: Rupture (कलह)

  • Pronunciation: ruhp-cher/ रप्चर
  • Part of Speech: Verb, Noun
  • Meaning: 
    a. break or burst suddenly. [Verb]
    b. breach or disturb (a harmonious feeling or situation). [Verb]
    c. an instance of breaking or bursting suddenly and completely. [Noun]
  • Synonyms: split, break, rift, fracture, tear, crack
  • Antonyms: collaborate, mend, join, fix, harmony
  • Usage in a Sentence: The incidents have not yet caused a major rupture in the political ties between the two countries.

    a. to cheer, salute (Verb)

    c. to call out in greet (Verb)
    d. a shout or call to attract attention (Noun)
    e. small, hard balls of ice that fall from the sky like rain (Noun)
  • Synonyms: welcome, salute, greet, acclaim
  • Antonyms: ignore, discourage, reject
  • Usage in a sentence: I tried to hail her from across the room.

5. Word: Brush Aside (नज़रअंदाज़ करना)

  • Part of Speech: Phrasal Verb
  • Meaning: to refuse to accept that something is important or true
  • Pronunciation:  ब्रश असाइड
  • Synonyms: disregard, reject
  • Antonyms: taken into account, overview
  • Use in a Sentence: He brushed aside my objections to his plan.

6. Word: Acrimonious (कटुतापूर्ण)

  • Pronunciation: ak-ruh-moh-nee-uh s/ ऐक्रमोनीअस

  • Meaning: (typically of speech or discussion) angry and bitter

    c. a self-governing state.
  • Synonyms: freedom, democracy
  • Antonyms: retention, belief
  • Usage in a Sentence: The people embrace their independence and sovereignty.

8. Word: Diplomats (राजनयिकों)

  • Pronunciation: Diplo-mat
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning
    an official representing a country abroad
  • Synonyms: ambassador, envoy
  • Usage in a Sentence: The new government has expelled all foreign diplomats.

9. Word: Fraught (व्याकुल)

  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Pronunciation: frawt/फ्रॉट
  • Meaning: causing or affected by anxiety or stress.
  • Synonyms: anxious, diligent
  • Antonyms: devoid, calm
  • Use in a Sentence: Their marriage has been fraught with difficulties.

10. Word: Undermine (दुर्बल बना देना)

  • Pronunciation: uhn-der-mahyn/अन्डर्माइन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. erode the base or foundation of (a rock formation).
    b. lessen the effectiveness, power, or ability of, especially gradually or insidiously.
  • Synonyms: weaken, impair, subvert
  • Antonyms: strengthen, encourage
  • Usage in a sentence: The scandal threatened to undermine the institution of the Presidency.
