Learn Vocabulary from 'The Hindu' Newspaper Wordlist: 19th Sep 2023

Vocabulary is an essential tool to ace the English section in competitive examinations. You can score better in the subject if you are able to intensify your command of Vocabulary. A regular reading habit can help you with this. With the exercise, you will come across a number of new words, whose meanings you can look up in the dictionary. This, in turn, will help you understand the context of the piece you are reading.

1. Word: Accommodative (समझौतापरक)

  • Pronunciation: uh-kom-uh-dey-tiv/अकामडेटिव
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. used to describe a person or someone who is eager or willing to help other people, for example by changing his or her plans
  • Synonyms: cooperative, helpful, adaptive
  • Antonyms: unobliging
  • Usage in a sentence: She was understanding, patient, accommodative, and always had a solution to all problems.

2. Word: Expediency (मुनाफ़ा)

  • Pronunciation: ik-spee-dee-yan-see/इक्स्पीडीअन्सी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. doing what is convenient or profitable rather than what is morally right.
  • Synonyms: suitable, benefit, convenience
  • Antonyms: altruism, inexpediency, unsuitable
  • Use in a Sentence: -It seems political expediency, rather than absolute economic need, will determine who gains from the conflict.

 3Word: Intrinsic (अंतर्भूत)

  • Pronunciation: in-trin-sik/ इन्ट्रिन्सिक
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: belonging naturally; essential
  • Synonyms: inherent, innate, essential
  • Antonyms: acquired, external
  • Usage in a sentence: The electoral system appeared to form an intrinsic part of a stable polity.

4. Word: Deride (उपहास करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-rahyd/डिराइड
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to laugh at someone or something in a way that shows you think they are stupid or of no value
  • Synonyms: ridicule, mock, scorn, taunt
  • Antonyms: respect, commend, compliment
  • Usage in a sentence: This building, once derided by critics, is now a major tourist attraction.

5. Word: Robust (मजबूत)

  • Pronunciation: roh-buhst/रोबस्ट
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. strong and healthy; vigorous.
  • Synonyms: powerful, persistent
  • Antonyms: weak, feeble
  • Usage in a sentence: The organization is taking a more robust approach to management.

6. Word: Inclusive (सम्मिलित)

  • Pronunciation: इन्क्लूसिव/ in-kloo-siv
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning -   covering every person and every aspect of a situation, with everything included
  • Synonyms - all-in, all-inclusive, comprehensive
  • Antonyms - exclusive, limited, restricted
  • Usage in a sentence - The all-inclusive tour packages include airfare, accommodations, meals, and activities.

7. Word: Decisive (निर्णायक)

  • Pronunciation: dih-sahy-siv/डिसाइसिव
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
     settling an issue; producing a definite result.
    b. having or showing the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively.
  • Synonyms: conclusive, resolute, final
  • Antonyms: uncertain, indefinite, conditional
  • Usage in a Sentence: They have declared a quick and decisive response.

8. Word: Stake (दाँव)

  • Pronunciation: steyk/ स्टेक
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Verb
  • Meaning
    a. a strong wooden or metal post with a point at one end, driven into the ground to support a plant, form part of a fence, mark a boundary, etc. [Noun]
    b. a sum of money or something else of value gambled on the outcome of a risky game or venture. [Noun]
    c. gamble (money or something else of value) on the outcome of a game or race. [Verb]
  • Synonyms: risk, hazard, gamble, wager
  • Antonyms: certainty, guard
  • Usage in a Sentence: She has a stake in the future success of the business.

9. Word: Amplify (बढ़ाना)

  • Pronunciation: am-pluh-fahy/ऐम्प्लफाइ
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: enlarge upon or add detail to (a story or statement)
  • Synonyms: expand, magnify, augment
  • Antonyms: reduce, shorten, abridge
  • Usage in a Sentence: You must amplify your effort by working a lot harder.

10. Word: Polity (सरकार/राज्य व्यवस्था)

  • Pronunciation: pol-i-tee/पालिटी
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a particular form or system of government
    b. the condition of being constituted as a state or other organized community or body
    c. government or administrative regulation
    d. a state or other organized community or body
  • Synonyms: nation, state, policy, country
  • Usage in a sentence: Could the polity sustain pockets of autonomy in key border regions without risking the destabilization of its interior?
