Geographical Indication Tag or GI Tag is a name or sign used on certain products which correspond or is originated from a specific geographical location (e.g., a town, region, state, or country). GI tag came into effect from September 15, 2003. GIs have been defined under Article 22 (1) of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) as:

"Indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a member, or a region or a locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographic origin.”

Till date, India has got a variety of products that have their GI tags and get identified uniquely all around the world. The tags so received are into various categories of goods such as agricultural products, handicraft items, food stuff, textiles, manufactured goods, natural goods, clothing, spice, medicine, betel leaf, footwear, etc.

Recently, Goa’s famous Khola Chillies or Canacona Chillies have received a GI tag making them unique from other types of chilies in the world. The Khola chilies are unique owing to their brilliantly red color and medium-pungent taste.

The Minister of Science and Technology said that “When farmers get GI tags for their crops, they will be able to promote their produce — this is our objective”. Also, he mentioned that he wants more of the youth to take farming as a career as young people nowadays take the least interest in farming. Getting GI tags for their yields might build interest among young people to take up farming.

Few of the products which have already received GI tags are given as follows:

  • Gulbarga Tur Dal (also known as Kalaburagi red gram) from Karnataka
  • Kolhapuri Chappal from Kolhapur, Maharashtra
  • Lucknow Zardozi from Uttar Pradesh
  • Goan Feni (liquor)
  • Odisha Rasagola
  • Darjeeling Tea
  • Kandhamal Haladi (Turmeric) from Odisha
  • Udupi Saree from Karnataka
  • Cheriyal Paintings from Telangana
  • Bikaneri Bhujia from Bikaner, Rajasthan
  • Salem Silk from Tamil Nadu
  • Blue Pottery from Jaipur, Rajasthan
  • Mysore Sandalwood from Karnataka

And the list continues…
