Phukot Karnali Hydro Electric Project
Why in news : Recently, NHPC Limited and Power Generation Company Limited (VUCL), Nepal signed a MoU for the development of Phukot Karnali Hydroelectric Project (480 MW) in Nepal.
- The Phukat Karnali Hydro Electric Project is expected to have an installed capacity of 480 MW. This substantial capacity will enable the production of about 2,448 GWh of electricity annually.
- It is located in Kalikot district of Karnali province of Nepal.The project will use the flow from Karnali river for power generation and the electricity generated will be fed into Nepal's integrated power system.
- The Phukot Karnali project includes several key features that are essential for its successful operation. These include the installation of a 109-metre-high RCC dam, an underground powerhouse and 6 turbines, each with a capacity of 79 MW.
- Additionally, the project plans to include a Surface Power House with a capacity of 6 MW using minimum environmental release and includes two machines of 3 MW each.
- The Phukot Karnali project has been designed as a Peking Run-of-River (PROR) type plan. The scheme allows optimum utilization of river flow variations by storing water during high flow periods and releasing it during peak demand periods.
- Power generation of Phukot-Karnali project will be facilitated by the flow of Karnali river.

WMO gets first female secretary general
Why in news: Geneva, 1 June 2023 (WMO) - Prof. Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first female Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), taking the helm of an organization at the fore of international efforts to monitor and tackle climate change and increasingly extreme weather.
- Saulo has been director of Argentina's National Meteorological Service since 2014 and is currently the first vice president of the WMO. She will take office on January 1, 2024 and will replace Professor Petteri Taalas, who has completed his two-term mandate.
- Soulo won a huge vote at the United Nations Climate and Weather Agency Congress in Geneva. Soulo has served as director of Argentina's National Meteorological Service since 2014.
- The lead election of the World Meteorological Congress takes place every four years.This agency plays an important role in coordinating international meteorological work. It relies on satellites and thousands of weather stations to measure key parameters of the atmosphere, land and ocean.
- The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) responsible for international cooperation in the fields of meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.
- It founded in 1950 and has 193 member states. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Anti-tobacco warnings will now be mandatory on OTT platforms
Why in news : India has become the first country to make it mandatory for over-the-top (OTT) platforms to display anti-tobacco warnings and disclaimers as seen in films shown in theatres and television programmes. The Union Health Ministry has notified necessary amendments to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2004.
A.Publishers of online curated content displaying tobacco products or their use will be required to display at least 30 seconds of anti-tobacco health spots at the beginning and middle of the program.
B.Over-the-top (OTT) platforms will be required to display anti-tobacco health warnings as a key static message at the bottom of the screen when displaying tobacco products or their use during an event. An audio-visual disclaimer of at least 20 seconds on the ill effects of tobacco use must be displayed at the beginning and middle of a program Anti-tobacco health warning messages, health spots and audio-visual disclaimers must be in the same language as used in online curated content.
C.The display of tobacco products or their use in online curated material shall not extend to the display of brands of cigarettes or other tobacco products or the display of any form of tobacco products or their use in the display or promotional material of tobacco products.
D.Publishers of online curated content displaying tobacco products or their use will be required to display at least 30 seconds of anti-tobacco health spots at the beginning and middle of the program.
E.There will be a black font on the white background and there will be a warning of 'tobacco causes cancer' or 'death from tobacco'. In addition, anti-tobacco health warning messages, health spots and audio-visual disclaimers should be in the same language as used in online curated content.

Why in news: Interbrand, the brand consultancy has recently released a list of India's top 50 most valuable brands.
A.This year's edition displays a total list value of 8,310,057 million rupees (US$100 billion), marking a significant increase of 167% over the last decade. Notably, this is the first time the total value of the table has crossed the US$100 billion mark.
B.TCS is the most valuable brand with a valuation of Rs 1,095,766 million, followed by Reliance Industries with a valuation of Rs 653,208. The top three brands account for 46% of the total value of the top ten brands. Additionally, the top five brands collectively contribute 40% of the overall value of the table.
C.Interestingly, three technology brands have made it to the top five for the first time in the past decade.
The total brand value of the top ten brands, is Rs 4,949,920 million, which is more than the combined value of the remaining 40 brands in the list, which is Rs 3,360,137 million. F.Examining the fastest growing sectors in the last ten years, FMCG exhibits a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25%, followed by home building and infrastructure at 17% and technology at 14%. The home building and infrastructure sector has experienced growth from Rs 69 billion to Rs 344 billion, followed by technology, which has grown from Rs 693 billion to Rs 2.5 trillion in the last ten years.
G.This year's list reflects the remarkable growth and development of the Indian brand landscape. The significant increase in total brand value, crossing the USD 100 billion mark, is a commendable achievement and shows the strength and potential of Indian brands globally. "
H.While the financial services sector still boasts the most brands with nine representatives on the table, the home building and infrastructure sector has seen the most significant growth, with seven brands entering the list since 2014.

First woman cadet in India to complete an advanced mountaineering course
Why in news : Shalini Singh created history as the country's first female NCC cadet by completing a mountaineering course in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand.
A.Shalini Singh, a 20-year-old NCC cadet from Lucknow, has become the first woman cadet in India to complete an advanced mountaineering course. He climbed a 15,400-foot peak in the Dring Valley in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand as part of the course.
B.By providing necessary resources and specialized training, Colonel Puneet Srivastava, Commander of 67 UP Battalion NCC Lucknow, enhanced their efforts. The team attended a training course at Tekla in Uttarkashi from April 26 to May 6.
C.According to Shalini, the month-long training should be concluded in temperatures below zero (-14 degrees Celsius) under difficult conditions. She continues by saying that she hopes other girls will be inspired by her work to follow similar efforts in the future.
D.Singh, a student of Bappa Shree Narayan Vocational PG College in Lucknow, started the one-month course on April 26. She was the only woman cadet in the team of 45 NCC cadets.
E.The course included training in rock climbing, rappelling, snow and ice climbing and camping. The cadets also underwent physical fitness test and medical examination. Senior wing NCC cadet Shalini Singh was enrolled in the 67 UP Battalion.

A.World Bicycle Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on June 3, 2018. The resolution for the same was passed on April 12, 2018. The day was adopted as World Bicycle Day by all 193 member countries of the United Nations General Assembly. It was also very much supported by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by about 56 countries.
B.It was supported by 'Sustainability Mobility for All', which turned it into 'World Bicycle Day', a great international day proposed by the United Nations General Assembly, which established it on June 3, 2018.
C.There are many benefits of cycling. Regular physical activities such as cycling, walking and running can cure many of our health issues. Cycling, which is one of them, is affordable, reliable, easy to ride, clean and environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transportation.
