Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is found in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located near the Tirthan River's banks. There are highly forested regions in the sanctuary and a variety of animals.
According to the Management Effectiveness Evaluation, the Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary was among India's top five best-managed protected areas.
The management effectiveness evaluation (MEE) of 146 national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in India was recently released by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
The Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district. It has a total size of 6,112 hectares (15,100 acres).
The Great Himalayan National Park is also connected to the sanctuary. It is situated between 2,100 and 4,900 meters above sea level. Direct cars and buses from Shimla and Chandigarh to Kullu connect to Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary.
The sanctuary was established in 1976, with parts listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is included in the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972's protected areas.
Among the total areas evaluated for this purpose, the Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary and the Great Himalayan National Park are two protected regions that have performed exceptionally well.
In 2014, the Great Himalayan National Park was also designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, owing to its reputation as a remarkable region for biodiversity conservation.
The Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary, on the other hand, is a protected area within the Seraj forest division. It is situated at an altitude of 5000 feet and overlooks the Tirthan River, from whence it gets its name. The refuge also has a link to the Great Himalayan National Park.
The Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses 61 square kilometres of land.
The sanctuary is located at a very high elevation. Ban Oak Forest, Kharsu Oak Forest, Coniferous Forest, Deodar Forest, and other woody places can be found there.
Snow Leopards, Musk Deer, Barking Deer, Asiatic Brown Bears, and Kashmir Flying Squirrels are among the other noteworthy animals.
Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary is also a conservation area for Himalayan Tahr conservation.

Governments and international organisations are increasingly using management effectiveness evaluations of protected areas as a major tool. It is utilised to determine the protected area and manage systems' strengths and shortcomings.
