TIME Magazine is well recognized for its yearly article "Person of the Year," which has been published for 97 years. TIME Magazine's Person of the Year award recognizes the person or group of people who have impacted news headlines in the previous 12 months.

In a similar vein, TIME has created a new section called Time Magazine Kid of the Year, in which it recognizes tomorrow's change-makers who are making a positive influence today.

Time Magazine KID of the Year Award - Overview

"The world belongs to those who make it," the magazine writes in its Time Magazine 'Kid of the Year article. "And, no matter how unstable the world appears to be at any one time, the heartening reality appears to be that each succeeding generation builds on what these kids have already accomplished: positive effects of all sizes."

Time's KID of the Year 2020

Gitanjali Rao, an Indian American, was named the first-ever TIME Magazine Kid of the Year in 2020. This 15-year-old researcher and innovator received recognition for her contributions to technology.

Gitanjali Rao's inventions of cyberbullying detection software and a device to detect lead in drinking water matched TIME's barometer for recognising the rising leaders of America's younger generation.

TIME awarded Gitanjal "Kid of the Year" (KOTY) after analyzing over 5000 nominations of children aged 8 to 16.

About Gitanjali Rao

She invented Tethys, a device that uses carbon nanotubes to detect lead components in water when she was in class seven. She had also received the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for this creation.

She also made an appearance on Ted Talks in 2019. Gitanjali Rao was also included in Forbes' '30 under 30' list for 2019.

She has also invented Epione, a device that allows doctors to identify addiction or misuse of prescribed medications.

Time's KID of the Year 2021

Orion Jean, who is only 11 years old, was chosen as TIME's Kid of the Year for 2021 from among thousands of nominees.

Jean sees himself as a compassionate ambassador, jumping in wherever he sees a necessity, whether collecting and providing 100,000 meals to food-insecure families across the country or delivering 500,000 books to children who don't have any at home.

In a time when isolation and division are common, Jean envisions the world as it could be if more people worked together to support their communities' most vulnerable members.

About Orion Jean

Orion Jean, a sixth-grader at Alma Martinez Intermediate School in Mansfield, is 11 years old. For his charitable initiatives and academic excellence, Orion has been chosen Time Magazine Kid Of The Year for 2021.

During the pandemic in 2020, he joined the National Kindness Speech Contest and won. With the money from the prize, he launched a kindness initiative to aid others.

In 2020, TIME Magazine joined with Nickelodeon to recognise burgeoning young talent in the United States and select the most important children whose tiny actions resulted in great effects by awarding them the Time Magazine Kid Of The Year. This award is only open to children between the ages of 8 and 16.

Members from the Special Olympics and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in the United States were on the judging panel. Aside from that, the shortlisting committee included Nickelodeon young stars and TIME kids reporters.
