About the Sundra Strait

The Sundra Strait is the location where the Samudra Shakti Exercise takes place. This makes the strait quite relevant. A strait is a waterway that acts as a connection between two large water bodies. In some cases, a strait is just a waterway between two blocks of land. The Sundra Strait holds importance in the case of the Samudra Shakti Exercise because:

  • It connects the Pacific Ocean's Java Sea with the Indian Ocean (south)
  • Sunda Strait is a 26 - 110 km wide channel that connects the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra
  • The Sunda Strait is a vital link between the Indian Ocean and eastern Asia
  • Because of the shallowness, very high tidal currents, sandbanks, and artificial impediments such as oil platforms off the coast of Java, it is notoriously tricky to navigate.

The Samudra Shakti Exercise has a lot of significance as with this exercise, India is getting closer to Indonesia, and the countries are building a mutual understanding. Also, with this exercise, the navies of both countries are getting into extensive training, making them more self-reliant. The Samudra Shakti Exercise is quite important from the prelim's perspective.
