The NAG Missile is a significant boost to the military. It is a third-generation missile tank that bears the strength of engaging and destroying enemies at any time of the day. NAG was one of the first five strategic missiles to be developed as part of the Integrated Defense System.

The Missile Development Program began in the 1980s. Other missiles developed as part of the Agni, Prithvi, and Akash have all been successfully developed and inducted into the project enlisting in the armed forces.

Development of NAG Missile

The NAG Missile was developed by the Indian Ministry of Defence's integrated guided missile development program (IGMDP). It was also responsible for developing missiles like Agni, Akash, Trishul, and Prithvi.

NAG Missile was tested for the first time in November 1990. In September 2001, the missile was launched from a tube in programmed control mode at the Interim Test Range in Balasore, Odisha.

In June 2002, two NAG Missiles were successfully test-fired. Successful launching of missiles took place, which led to the birth of the Anti-tank missile.

Composition of the NAG Missile

  • The airframe of the NAG anti-armour guided weapon is made of lightweight and high-strength composite materials.
  • The NAG Missile is capable of top attack and is highly resistant to countermeasures.
  • It has four foldable wings, a length of 1.85m, a diameter of 0.20m, a wingspan of 0.4m, and a weight of 43kg.
  • The guidance system is housed in a blunt nose cone, while the middle portion houses a compact sensor package and the warhead's main charge.
  • A booster rocket motor is located in the back.
  • Four tail fins are installed at the back of the missile to help it stay stable in flight.
  • There is a real-time image processor to provide automatic target detection and tracking capabilities.
  • The digital autopilot provides guidance, stability, and control to the missile during the flight.
  • NAG Missile also has an electric actuation system for flight control.

Features of the NAG Missile

  • The NAG Missile was designed to attack and neutralize heavily fortified enemy tanks. It also can strike at night.
  • It has a maximum range of 4 km and a minimum range of 500 meters.
  • It can strike and neutralize armoured vehicles such as tanks.
  • There are mainly two types of attack: top attack mode and direct attack mode. The missile climbs sharply after launch and flies at a certain altitude before plunging on top of the target in the 'top attack' mode. It travels at a lower altitude in 'direct attack' mode and strikes the target directly.
  • It turns its infra-red seeker to bounce on the target.
  • It has an amphibious capacity with infantry vehicles.

NAG Missile Significance

Carrier NAMICA launched the NAG Anti Tank Missile after it reached its production in the final stage. Initially, the missile was imported from countries like USA and Israel. The country had to face the unavailability of credible anti-tank weapons due to the aggression by the People's Liberation Army in Ladakh.

Later. the missiles were produced by Defence Public Sector Undertaking in the country. The army was looking for a third-generation missile due to the stoppage of Advanced enemy attacks.
