Bihar MLAs are integral members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The members are elected every five years through a democratic voting system. The last election in Bihar was held in 2020, in which 243 MLAs were elected from various political parties. The RJD has the most number of Bihar MLAs (79 in total) seats in the Assembly.
Earlier, Bihar had 325 MLA seats but the number was reduced to 243 in 2000 when Jharkhand was separated from Bihar. In this article, we have shared a list of MLAs in Bihar, along with some important details about the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
MLA in Bihar
The 17th Assembly elections for Bihar MLAs were held in 2020 in which RJD won 75 seats. However, shortly after the elections, various MLAs changed parties and joined other alliances. As a result, many by-elections were also conducted. On 10 August 2022, several Bihar MLAs joined the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) alliance.
Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar left the NDA alliance in 2022 to form an alliance with the MGB. Now, the MGB has 165 Bihar MLAs in total.
Bihar MLA Seats
There are a total of 243 seats in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. When the first Assembly elections were held in Bihar, the total number of Bihar MLA seats was 331. The number of seats in the Bihar Assembly has changed many times. Here is an overview of the same.
- In 1997, the number of Bihar MLA seats was reduced to 325.
- After the separation of Jharkhand from Bihar in 2000, the number of seats in the Assembly was reduced to 243.
Reservation of Bihar MLA Seats
In the Bihar Legislative Assembly, many seats are reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes. Here are the details of the same.
- Out of total 243 seats, 38 Bihar MLA seats are reserved for candidates from Scheduled Caste (SC).
- A total of 2 seats are also reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Tribe (ST).
