The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) is an independent nodal agency under the Department of Space. It was established to promote private investment and innovation in the space sector.

The creation of IN-SPACe is a part of an important set of reforms to make space-based applications widely accessible to everyone. It will bring ISRO and private players together to better utilize India's space resources and increase space-based activities.

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) History

The Minister of State for Space, Jitendra Singh, announced the establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in June 2020 after the Union Cabinet approved it.

IN-SPACe will have its own Chairperson and Board. Pawan Goenka, former Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) Significance

According to former ISRO chairman K Sivan, the Indian Industry has merely a three percent share in a rapidly growing global space economy. India is unable to compete in the global market because of the lack of technology and resources to undertake independent space projects.

This has limited India's role to mainly that of a supplier of components and subsystems. Further, ISRO cannot cater to the increasing demands for space-based applications and services from various sectors in India.

At the same time, several private companies are waiting for the opportunity to develop their own launch vehicles. Currently, all launches happen only on ISRO Rockets in India. With the establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, private players can now participate in -

  1. Satellite building
  2. Building of launch vehicles
  3. Carrying out launches
  4. Providing space-based services by developing applications
  5. Developing subsystems and systems for space sector activities

The result of private involvement in the space sector would be greater dissemination of space technologies, better utilization of space resources, and increased space-based services.

The private involvement will also free up ISRO from routine activities that delay its strategic objectives. With this, ISRO can concentrate more on research and development, interplanetary exploration, and strategic launches.
