To make a change, Europe has made plans for a green transition. In 2019, EU leaders created the objective of achieving a climate-neutral change by 2050. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires multiple changes in various sectors. To become climate neutral, it is important to reduce greenhouse emissions and compensate for any remaining emissions. The Fit for 55 packages EU was adopted by the EU to start with a climate-neutral goal.
On July 14, 2021, the European Commission adopted the 'Fit for 55' proposal as a part of the European Green Deal. Fit for 55 package EU aims to modernise the existing legislation and introduce new policy measures. These measures will help to bring about transformative changes in every industry and reduce net emissions by at least 55% by 2030.
The Fit for 55 packages EU includes the following legislative proposals and policy initiatives:
The EU ETS commission is in charge of lowering the overall emission ceiling and increasing the annual emission reduction rate. The changes should result in an overall emission reduction of 61% by 2030.
The regulation has set an overall target for carbon dioxide removal from natural sinks. This corresponds to removing around 310 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030.
Compared to 2005, the Commission has decided on a proposal to increase the EU-level greenhouse gas emissions reduction target from 29% to 40%. These binding emission targets are to be followed by all the member states that are not covered by the EU ETS or the LULUCF.
By 2030, 40% of energy should be produced from renewable sources. The Directive on energy efficiency states that the public sector will be required to renovate 3% of the buildings annually to create jobs and reduce energy consumption.
Strict CO2 emission standards for passenger cars and vans will be introduced to fasten the transition to zero-emission mobility. All new cars registered from 2035 will be emission-free if they properly follow the regulations.
The Energy Tax Directive aligns the taxation of products with the new policies and promotes clean technologies. It is trying to remove outdated exemptions and safeguard the Member States' green tax revenues.
A new mechanism gas will be introduced where a carbon price is set when importing certain products. This is done to ensure that the climate change action does not lead to any carbon leakage.

Sustainable aviation fuels such as biofuels and electro fuels have a lot of potential to change the aviation emissions reduction rate. With the ReFuelEU Aviation proposal, the EU aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the aviation sector.
A goal of using renewable and low-carbon fuels has been set. This will help reduce the onboard ships' greenhouse gas intensity up to 75% by 2050.
