Coastal vulnerability is a geospatial concept that determines the places and people at more risk of coastal hazards. The coastal hazards that can cause damage to the property of a person include sea-level rise, coastal storms, and erosion. Coastal hazards also pose a significant danger to the social system of coastal communities.

Coastal Vulnerability Index [CVI] - Overview

The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) established a Coastal Vulnerability Index [CVI] by conducting a coastal vulnerability analysis. This was done by making an atlas comprising 156 maps on a 1:1,00,000 scale at the state level of the Indian coast.

INCOIS collects data on coastal slope, sea-level rise, shoreline change rate, coastal geomorphology, coastal elevation, tidal range, and significant wave height to develop an atlas.

The map helps predict the relative coastal risk due to future sea-level rise of the Indian coast. It depends on the physical and geophysical criteria, and these criteria also help carry out the coastal Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Mapping (MHVM).

INCOIS is a division of the Earth System Science Organization (ESSO), located in New Delhi. The ESSO serves as an executive arm of the MoES. It works through customised ocean modelling, observations, marine data centre, and computation facilities.
