10 Mistakes You Cannot Afford in Your Drop year

By Vijeta Bhatt|Updated : March 1st, 2023

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted by a consortium of National Law universities every year. Through this entrance, test Candidates are shortlisted for the admission into Five-year Law (B.A.LL.B.) (H) Course. This entrance test is India’s most challenging entrance examination related to the legal fraternity. It is also the most densely competed law entrance examination in the sub-continent wherein around 65,000 students compete for a meager sum of 2300 seats at 22 National Law Universities.

CLAT 2023 results are out. Sadly, only some of the students will be able to make it to the National Law Universities. Beyond them, some students who will be selected through AILET, SET, etc., and make it.  After these students get to admission their respective law colleges, there remain a large number of students who will not make it to any of these colleges, for various reasons.

What to do if you could not crack CLAT

There are a lot of external factors which create a hindrance during preparation and many of the students are not able to crack the CLAT. Here, in this situation a lot of students are not in a position to make choice. Whether I accept my result and take admitted to any other institute or should I drop a year and retake the entrance exam?

If this becomes difficult for you that what should I do? and you’re amidst a pool of thoughts but can’t swim to a decision, this article will help you to clear the air. Every year many candidates make the mistake of dropping a year in the hope of cracking CLAT and making it to the top NLUs but almost every candidate meets the same fate and they score almost the same as the previous year.

Reasons why dropping a year is not advised

CLAT does not require a complete whole year of preparation. This trend applies to UPSC, Judicial services, etc. so, it is strongly advised that candidates never think about dropping a year. The majority of the candidates who crack CLAT do it within less than 4 months of preparation.

The reason behind it is that this entrance exam does not test your ability to retain knowledge but tests your aptitude by applying it to practical situations. Except for current affairs, no other section of the entrance exam needs you to remember things up. This paper is analytical in nature and ample amount of daily practice should do the trick.

The value of a Year (365 days)

If you are thinking about dropping a year then you must know the value of one year. Here, you are looking forward to investing for a better college can be invested in internships, practical learning, and other activities which help you to strengthen your CV. Strengthening your CV makes you more employable, since that is the ultimate goal for most of the aspirants, to secure a good job at the end of the degree.

In the field of law experience makes you a better person of the field, so you should devote your time to improving your skills and learning practical things. Because end of the day knowledge will be superior at every place as compared to the name of the institute. Invest your precious time to improve your skills rather than dropping a year for any law entrance exam.

Do not despair:

It doesn't matter if you passed last year, or whatever your grades were. These things don't matter as long as you decide you will study hard in this and are very motivated to get into the college you desire. I agree that it may require an unreasonable amount of effort and concentration but if you are determined, you can get the top ten position in this regardless of your performance last year. I got AIR 3436 in 2016 and got Lower ranked NLU, but my goal was always NLSIU. So I left college and was severely criticized by teachers, friends, and many others.

They say the dropper usually does not fit into the 100 and those who do nothing by chance. Do not listen to them.

Be proud of:

Be proud of this dropper because you have decided to make yourself successful and some have given up learning the things they hate. It may take 1 year, 2 years, or even 3 years but as long as you achieve your dream it is worth the risk, time, and effort.

Accept the Challenge:

Taking a drop is not something to be ashamed of but whether you succeed or fail depends on you and not someone else. You can have the best training, the best teachers, and the best notes, but if you do not set the hours, it is useless. Every year there are people who have more rights than others. Yes, I'm talking about those who are the best Lawyer's kids and those who have a lot of money to take them to the best training, but what is your competitive edge? It is up to you to put them together and think for yourself, be smart, and complete yourself. But I will not work outside. You need to be willing to challenge yourself by putting yourself in a permanent position of discomfort.

Stay Motivated:

I want to ask you one question: What do you want to be remembered for?

I hope you want to be remembered as a grinder who fights his way through all the problems and indifference. Do not give up on your goals and dreams. Get up in the morning and go to bed at night. Stay focused and try to accomplish every single goal every day. No one can give you the effort you need. No one can tell you when you have succeeded. You know when you are successful.

Join the Test Series:

Joining a test series is a great way to stick to the right path and test your performance. Do not forget one thing - some say that if you do not pass the test successfully, you may not get a high position, which is not entirely true. I used to get about 70+ marks in these tests while there were students in my group who usually got 100+. I personally believe, that the difficulty level of these tests is very high and can sometimes mislead those who want it and make them depressed. I would urge candidates to consider these tests as guidelines.

If you get 100+ points everything goes well, just read it regularly and you will be amazed at your final result as I was.

Another thing I would like to make clear about the test series is that I see students joining 3-4 test series with different syllables at different times which makes it difficult for the student to focus on one chapter. So I would suggest that you join only one test series and follow it religiously.

Stick to the schedule:

As for my routine, I had to be a night owl. I studied until 6 in the morning. I’m glad I never got used to reading further and instead took a short break in between. I was not a great person but anyone can get a top 100 if they stick to the syllabus and read continuously every day. In my case, apart from sleeping and eating, all my time was devoted to my studies for this year.

Join Training Center:

Teachers at training centers will be very helpful. They will tell you ways to remember things. They will tell you to solve the paper quickly. You will not be able to do that by watching any YouTube videos or reading them for yourself.

Set Your Priorities:

If you are aiming for top NLU at 11 and 12 but while in the middle of Quitting Year, it has been shown that an NLU degree is required if one wants to do well in this field. So I paid close attention to CLAT and focused on getting a top NLU.

Which is the safer option?

If you are still feeling that you should take another swing at CLAT then you should try it while attending law school.

  • Take admission to a good college which is located in a big city so you can get a lot of opportunities and you can prepare there for the CLAT because the first year of law school is easier and all the subjects taught are not going to be complex.

  • While you are at your law school, you have almost a year at your hand to prepare for the CLAT. Candidates can easily invest 2-3 hours daily for the preparation and can also devote extra time over the weekends as well as vacations.

  • The General knowledge section is the biggest hurdle for the candidates who are preparing CLAT exam in the first year of law school, as I have already mentioned above that it is the only section that requires you to mug up things.

So one year of law school will also give you quality time in the morning to read Newspapers and static GK. One hour every day for a year is more than enough to score well in this section.
