UPSC CSE Exam Pattern
UPSC CSE also referred to as the UPSC examination. The exam is conducted in phases – UPSC Prelims and UPSC Mains (Written and Interview).
The UPSC Preliminary examination consists of two objective type papers:
- General Studies Paper I
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT- Civil Services Aptitude Test)
The written part of the UPSC CSE Mains Examination consists of nine papers of subjective nature. Among these two papers are qualifying, and seven other marks are counted, followed by the Interview for the final merit. Candidates very often find the UPSC Syllabus coverage overwhelming due to its vastness. A candidate has to have good command over the concepts from the optional subject and the topics of General Studies as well. The written part of the UPSC CSE Mains Examination consists of nine papers of conventional type, which include:

Requisites of the examination
- Any graduate who attained the age of 21 years can appear for the UPSC CSE. The upper age limit to appear in the examination is 32 years.
- The number of attempts is restricted to the candidates as per the category- General (6), OBC (9), SC/ST (unlimited until the age of 37 years) and PH candidates (unlimited until the age of 45 years).

- UPSC CSE is the common screening test for both the civil services and the Indian Forest Services Mains. The application for the Indian Forest Services can be indicated by taking both the exam. And for any of these examinations, the choice can be reflected, marking it accordingly.
- To appear for the UPSC Mains examination, a candidate must get screened through the Prelim examination. It is important to note that the Preliminary examination marks are not counted but is the minimum criteria to appear in the UPSC Mains examination. Therefore, it is advisable to practice mock to get a good hold of the key concepts. Practising mocks have several other benefits than mastering the core concepts.
