CLAT 2022- Know All About NUJS Kolkata

NUJS is considered one of the best along with the elite national law schools in India built on the five-year law degree model proposed and implemented by the Bar Council of India. The University recommends a five-year integrated B.A./BSc. LLB (Hons.) degree programme at the undergraduate level and a Master of Laws (LLM) programme at the postgraduate degree.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF JURIDICAL SCIENCES, KOLKATA

  • The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was formed under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999) approved by the West Bengal Legislature in July 1999.

  • The University was notified under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2004 and has been awarded permanent affiliation by the Bar Council of India in July 2005.

  • At First, classes, which started in 2000, were held at Aranya Bhavan, where the Environment Ministry of the Government of West Bengal is located, and the first batches of students began staying in government flats. On 28 October 2002, the University's current permanent campus was unveiled by the then Chief Justice of India, B. N. Kirpal.

  • Admission to the previous programme is all the way through the Common Law Admission Test, a highly competitive, nationwide standard entrance examination, held together by fourteen of the seventeen national law schools. NUJS also extends MPhil, PhD and diploma in business laws and other programs. It also provides several online courses that attract students from 17 countries across the world so far.

Admission

  • NUJS takes students for an undergraduate and postgraduate program through Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) which is being conducted every year.

  • NUJS has been ranked in the top in the National Law Universities list. Students must have passed 12th standard or equivalent with no less than 50% marks.

Course Structure

  • The B.A. /B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course entices school (Higher Secondary) leaving bright young aspirants to the field of law. The five-year undergraduate course is split up into ten semesters. The students exemplify practically all the states of India, as well as foreign countries.

  • This programme reveals the students to Indian modes of legal education (which emphasize critical thinking and self-inquiry) as well as to process and substantive law. It also improves the students' ability to do advanced scholarly work.

  • The LL.M degree program is a one-year postgraduate course. This programme is established to attract students who either one wishes to join academia or seek to acquire advanced research skills before entering the legal profession. The students, therefore, come from a wide range of backgrounds with differing legal concerns and career plans. Our senior faculty members work carefully with the students to help them in realizing their full academic potential.

  • The M. Phil Degree Programme is expressly designed for aspiring legal academics, i.e., students who wish to pursue sustained independent study and research and are planning careers in law teaching. The candidate will be qualified for receipt of the degree only if he/she completes the recommended obligations of the course within an upper limit period of three years.

  • The PhD and LL.D degrees are two of the highly innovative law degrees offered by the University. The candidates to these degrees are projected to generate a thesis that will constitute a substantial and valuable contribution to legal scholarship. The students would be expected to incorporate the insights of other disciplines into their work, drawing on the expertise and support not only accessible at NUJS but also from other leading universities of the world.

Placements (Work Experience)

  • The Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC), 2019, is proud to validate that the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata recorded the highest number of placements across all National Law Universities (NLUs) in the country for the graduating Batch of 2019.

  • An aggregate of 121 job offers were made to the Batch, with many students receiving multiple job offers. A total of 90 students accepted job offers, excluding the students who had standing job offers but decided to opt for alternative career options.

  • The average annual packages presented by foreign law firms ranged from INR 42-46 lakhs/annum and by top domestic law firms ranged from INR 15-18 lakhs/annum. Students joining companies in the role of in-house counsels collected packages ranging from INR 12-14 lakhs.

  • Notably, the students in the Batch of 2019 have also opted for a range of diverse career paths.

  • A substantial number of students decided out of the recruitment process to prepare for civil and judicial services examinations. In contrast, a number of them have decided to pursue higher studies in foreign universities.

  • Some students also chose entrepreneurship. ODRways, a startup for online mediation of disputes by some students of the Batch of 2019 has carved a space for itself by being recognized by the Government of India as an organization for dispute resolution through mediation.

  • This accomplishment by the Batch of 2019 is a reflection of continued commitment to excellence which NUJS has endeavoured to maintain over the years. 

College Library

  • The Library compilation has over 20,000 titles exclusive of titles donated by renowned personalities and organizations. The Library also subscribes e-books and e-journals. The Library subscribes to approximately 124 print journals, including foreign publications, which cover a wide range of legal as well as other related subjects.

  • The Library has the archives of the complete sets of most prestigious journals in the field of law. Adequate provision is made for general reading, newspapers and magazines.

  • Keeping in stride with the digital age, the Library has enhanced its resources by subscribing to various leading online databases Hein Online, Westlaw, LexisNexis, Manupatra, EJURIX, SCC Online, JSTOR, Sage Journals, Kluwer Arbitration and EPW (NUJS Resources).

  • The databases can be retrieved across the campus on LAN and Wi-Fi and off-campus by 'Remote Access'. The Library is open 20 hours a day (24 x 7 during and before exams), and all days of the year except three national holidays. CCTV installation helps in support service.

  • Implementation of RFID & Digital Library Assistant (for stock management as well as self-checkout service), Magnetic Tattle tapes and Security Gate (for security purpose) have made it a very user-friendly and state-of-the-art- technology Library.

Moot Court Competitions

  • Since the very beginning, students of NUJS have shown consistency in their excellence in National as well as International Moot Court competitions. Besides winning several rounds, and a few being the First Indian team to do so, the Moot Court Society of the University has organized five NUJS National Moot Court Competitions.

  • From 2004-2007, NUJS organized the national moot court competition on Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2008, NUJS collaborated with Herbert Smith, a top London based law firm, and managed the moot court competition on Corporate Law.

  • The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) team comprising of Ashika Jain, Kaira Pinheiro, Anand Krishnan all from 2nd year B.A.LLB class and Sahaj Mathur from 1st year B.A.LLB class have appeared as the winner of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition, 2020, Vienna (popularly known as Vis Vienna Moot Court Competition) on 09/04/2020.

  • The final round was in between WBNUJS and the University of Freiburg. It is one of the most esteemed international moot court competition which attracts more than 300 law schools from all around the world.
