Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your ability to score better in all the law entrance exams.a As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or it's meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. 1. Word: Desist (परहेज करना)

  • Pronunciation: dih-zist, -sist/ डिज़िस्ट
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning: stop doing something; cease or abstain.
  • Synonyms: abstain, refrain, forbear, discontinue
  • Antonyms: continue, carry on, endure
  • Usage in a Sentence: They agreed to desist from the bombing campaign.

2. Word: Extremist (चरमपंथी)

  • Pronunciation: ik-stree-mist/ इक्स्ट्रीमिस्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning: a person who holds extreme political or religious views, especially one who advocates illegal, violent, or other extreme action.
  • Synonyms: radical, fanatic, immoderate, militant
  • Antonyms: moderate, conventional, conservative
  • Usage in Sentence: The extremist group was banned from the event because their radical and racist views do not line up with the agenda.

3. Word: Outflank (से बढ़ कर होना)

  • Pronunciation: out-flangk/ आउट्फ्लैंगक
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. move round the side of (an enemy) so as to outmanoeuvre them.
    b. outwit
  • Synonyms: outdo, surpass, outsmart, defeat

4. Word: Subversive (विध्वंसकारी)

  • Meaning:
    a. seeking or intended to subvert an established system or institution. (Adjective)
    b. a subversive person. (Noun)
  • Synonyms: revolutionary, disloyal, dissident, rebellious, destructive
  • Antonyms: loyal, obedient, beneficial
  • Usage in a Sentence: Hong Kong still has to enact national security legislation to prohibit subversion against China and activity by foreign political bodies.

5. Word: Sordid (अनैतिक)

  • Pronunciation: sawr-did/ सॉर्डड
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. involving immoral or dishonourable actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt.
    b. dirty or squalid.
  • Synonyms: low, mean, dirty, foul, base
  • Antonyms: reputable, clean, honourable
  • Usage in a Sentence: All concerned should be cross-examined to get to the bottom of the whole sordid affair.

6. Word: Subvert (नष्ट कर दना)

  • Meaning:

  • Synonyms: mess up, spoil, muddle, ruin

8. Word: Flee (फरार होना)

  • Meaning: run away from a place or situation of danger.
