Vocabulary plays a very important role in enhancing your ability to score better in all the law entrance exams.a As you glance through the newspaper every day, you come across a number of new words. Your reading exercise is impeded if you do not understand the meaning of a word, or it's meaning in a given context. Such challenges could be overcome by inculcating a sound habit of reading. The habit lets you encounter something new every day in the form of words, the meaning of which you were unaware of.

1. Word: Persecute (कष्ट देना)

  • Pronunciation: pur-si-kyoot/पर्सक्यूट

  • Meaning:
    a. subject (someone) to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs.
    b. harass or annoy (someone) persistently.

3. Word: Insurgent (विद्रोही/बागी)

  • Pronunciation: in-sur-juhnt/ इन्सर्जन्ट
  • Part of Speech: Noun, Adjective
  • Meaning: 
    a. a person fighting against a government or invading force; a rebel or revolutionary. [Noun]
    b. rising in active revolt. [Adjective]
  • Synonyms: rebel, recusant, revolutionary
  • Antonyms: obedient, loyal, loyalist
  • Usage in a sentence: It was also a fight to consolidate his position within the insurgent.

4. Word: Surreal (अवास्तविक)

  • Pronunciation: suh-ree-uh l/सरीअल
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning:
    a. of, relating to, or characteristic of surrealism, an artistic and literary style; surrealistic
    b. having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal; fantastic
  • Synonyms:  odd, peculiar, strange, unusual, weird
  • Antonyms:  sane, sensible, sober, wise, enlightened
  • Usage in a sentence: Driving through the total darkness was a slightly surreal experience.

5. Word: Tad (शिशु)

  • Pronunciation: tad/टैड
  • Part of Speech: Noun
  • Meaning:
    a. a small child, especially a boy
    b. a very small amount or degree; bit
  • Synonyms: little bit, smidgen, shade, bit
  • Antonyms: lot, significant amount of
  • Usage in a sentence: The fish was OK, but the chips were a tad greasy.

6. Word: Deterrent (डराकर रोकने वाला)

  • Pronunciation: dih-tur-uhnt/ डिटरन्ट

  • Meaning
    a. a thing that discourages or is intended to discourage someone from doing something. (Noun)
    b. able or intended to deter. (Adjective)

  • Usage in a sentence: The pain of it should be deterrent enough to never make the mistake twice.

7. Word: Behest (आदेश)

  • Pronunciation: bih-hest/बिहेस्ट

    a. a command or directive (Noun)
    b. an earnest or strongly worded request (Noun)
  • Synonyms: command, mandate, bidding, injunction
  • Antonyms: orison, personal choice

8. Word: Ubiquitous (सर्वत्र)

  • Pronunciation: ri-streynt/यूबिक्विटस
  • Part of Speech: Adjective
  • Meaning
    a. existing or being everywhere, especially at the same time; omnipresent
  • Synonyms: omnipresent, universal, everywhere, pervasive, prevalent
  • Antonyms: rare, absent, scarce, infrequent
  • Usage in a sentence: The mobile phone, the most ubiquitous of consumer-electronic appliances, is about to enter a new age.

9.  Word: Contravene (उल्लंघन करना)

  • Pronunciation: kon-truh-veen/ कान्ट्रवीन
  • Part of Speech: Verb
  • Meaning:
    a. to come or be in conflict with; go or act against; deny or oppose:
    b. to violate, infringe, or transgress:
  • Synonyms: breach, flout, transgress
  • Antonyms: collaborate, agree, accept
  • Usage in a sentence: One should not behave in a manner that contravenes the rules.

10. Word: Flinch (पीछे हटना)

  • Pronunciation: flinch/फ्लिन्च
  • Part of Speech
  • Meaning: Verb
    a. to make a sudden, small movement because of pain or fear
    b. to draw back or shrink, as from what is dangerous, difficult, or unpleasant
    c. to shrink under pain; wince
  • Synonyms: wince, recoil, shrink, quail 
  • Antonyms: power through, confront, face
  • Usage in a sentence: He didn't even flinch when the nurse cleaned the wound.
