The North East Rural Livelihood Project [NERLP] was established in 2012 which is a Rs. 683 crore multilateral project backed by the World Bank. The project is under the Ministry of Northeastern Regional Development (DoNER). The North East Rural Livelihood Project [NERLP] is conducted in 11 districts and is scheduled for 5 years.

The project will involve approximately 300,000 households in 1,645 62-block villages in four states. This project focuses on bundled growth through the value chain in collaboration with professional organisations.

The purpose of this project is to improve the lives of rural people, unemployed youngsters of the regions, the disadvantaged lot, and especially women, in four northeastern states.

The following are the key objectives of the North East Rural Livelihood Project [NERLP] -

  • To establish a sustainable community organisation centred on the Women's Support Group (SHG), the Men's and Women's Youth Group (YG), and the Community Development Group (CDG).
  • Self-help groups are informal groups of people, that are generally self-managed and peer-controlled, who form a community to frame ways to improve their lives.
  • It also aims to enhance the financial position and economic livelihood of people.
  • This project encourages self-governance, thorough functioning, and strategic planning, with integrity and responsibility.
  • Build community agency partnerships for natural resource management, market collaboration, microfinance, and sectoral business services.

North East Rural Livelihood Project [NERLP] Significance and Outcome

  • The lives of approximately 18 lakh residents are influenced by The North East Rural Livelihood Project [NERLP] by the creation of shared assets worth approximately 136 crore rupees.
  • The project has trained 10462 boys and girls on a variety of specialised skills through skill development and education and currently employs a total of 5494 people.
  • The project has empowered the poor in rural areas and lives about 300,000 households in 1,645 villages out of 58 development blocks in 11 districts of four northeastern states.
  • Activities carried out by the Community Development Group include wasteland reclamation, dam construction, plantations, horticultural projects, hydrogen-based village electrification, solar provision, agriculture, livestock, health, and sanitation water needs.
  • Includes spring water harvesting to reduce the amount.
  • The self-sufficiency development of self-help groups (SHGs) has increased along with the family income.
  • Women are becoming more knowledgeable, expressive, and demonstrating better leadership skills.
  • The community emerges actively through participation in the development process and acceptance of personal responsibilities.
  • SHG leaders are growing wherein one has been elected as the Cabinet Minister of the Tripura State Parliament, and many are Panchayati leaders.
