Global Innovation Index: India’s Journey Highlights

The Global Innovation Index (GII) provides specific information on the performance of 131 economies and countries worldwide in terms of innovation. The Global Innovation Index is a metric used by governments around the globe to analyse social and economic changes in their countries. The GII's 80 indicators cover various topics, including education, politics, corporate sophistication, and infrastructure.

The Global Innovation Index is released by The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Portulans Institute. They collaborate to produce the Global Innovation Index Report. The Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Turkish Exporters Assembly, and the Eco petrol Group are the Corporate Network partners (Colombia).

 India's position in the Global Innovation Index has been steadily improving, with the country moving from 81 in 2015 to 46 in the Global Innovation Index 2021. Governments worldwide use the GII to measure social and economic trends in their countries.

The World Intellectual Property Organization ranked India 46th in the Global Innovation Index 2021, according to a statement released by the NITI Aayog on September 20, 2021. The country has risen two places from its 2020 position.

According to the official announcement, India has been steadily improving in the Global Innovation Index over the last few years, going from 81st place in 2015 to 46th in 2021.

Key Highlights of the Global Innovation Index

  • Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands are the top five countries.
  • The index reveals that "a progressive eastward shift in the locus of innovation" is underway, with several Asian economies climbing the rankings.
  • China, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam are the Asian economies that have made the most progress on the index in recent years, with all four currently ranking in the top 50.
  • India has consistently improved its innovation ranking over the last five years, making it one of the Central and Southern Asian innovators.
  • China, the only middle-income country among the top 30, is ranked 14th.

What led to the rise of India in the Global Innovation Index?

  • The enormous intellectual capital, the thriving start-up environment, and the great work done by commercial and public research institutes have contributed to India's constant growth in the GII ranking.
