According to the Karnataka Department of Tourism, Mysore Dasara is the most royal and significant festival in Karnataka. It is celebrated as a 10-day event in Mysore, starting with nine nights called Navratri and the last day being Vijayadashmi.

In the wake of the ongoing pandemic for the last two years, the 400-year-old iconic festival celebrations were low-key affairs.

History of Mysore Dasara

Mysore was once called ‘Mahishur,’ as it is believed to be the place where Goddess Chamundeshwari (a form of Durga) killed the buffalo-headed demon, Mahishasura. Since then, the nine days of Mysore Dasara have been celebrated with much enthusiasm.

The city celebrates this prominent festival grandly. There are displays of decorated elephants, horses, and camels walking together. Lakhs and lakhs of people visit the city every year during this season.

However, the highlights of the 2020 and 2021 celebrations were the inaugurations done by the corona warriors, including five representatives of doctors, nurses, workers, cleaners and the police to honour them.
