One of the busiest countries in South and Southeast Asia, India has 487 airports, including military bases, flying schools, and airstrips. This number includes 35 international airports and 123 domestic airports, some of which cater to both military and civilian use.

The airports in India are managed by a governing body known as the Airport Authority of India. This body is specifically invested in managing India's commercial domestic and international airports. Even after the privatization of numerous airports around the country, the AAI is bestowed with the responsibility of managing 137 airports, including 24 international airports, 103 domestic airports, and 10 customs airports. The AAI is mainly responsible for the creation, maintenance, degradation, and management of the Indian civil aviation infrastructure and works under the supervision of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Under the UDAN scheme, the Government of India is building airports in many smaller towns of India to enable access to aviation and promote better connectivity.
