UN-REDD PROGRAMME and REDD+
UN-REDD PROGRAMME
- The United Nations Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD) aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhance carbon stocks in forests while contributing to national sustainable development.
- It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
- As of March 2021, 65 partner countries are members of the organization.
- It is a collaborative programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (UNEP).
- It was established in 2008 as a result of the UNFCCC's decisions at COP-13 on the Bali Action Plan and REDD.
- UN-REDD provides direct funding and technical support to the design and implementation of the National REDD+ strategy.
UN-REDD+
REDD+ includes:
- Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD)
plus
- Conservation of forest carbon stocks
- Sustainable management of forests and
- Enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries
That means not only reducing forest emission but also forest conservation and sustainable forest management and enhancing carbon stocks. The aim of REDD+ is to mitigate climate change by incentivizing forest conservation.
The Paris Climate Agreement also acknowledges the role of forests in climate change mitigation and encourages member countries to implement and support REDD+.
Apart from the UN-REDD Programme, the projects assisting countries engaged in REDD+ include:
- World Bank's Forest Carbon Partnership Facility,
- Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative,
- Global Environment Facility (GEF),
- Green Climate Fund
- Australia's International Forest Carbon Initiative, and
- Collaborative Partnership on Forests
