POSHAN ABHIYAN- NATIONAL NUTRITIONAL MISSION

By Sudheer Kumar K|Updated : January 1st, 2021

Though there are a number of schemes meant for improving the nutritional status of children (0-6 years age) and pregnant women and lactating mothers, the level of malnutrition and related problems in the country are still high.

The scheme POSHAN ABHIYAN seeks to create synergy, ensure better monitoring, issue alerts for timely action, and encourage States/UTs to perform, guide and supervise the line Ministries and States/UTs to achieve the targeted goals.

Poshan Abhiyaan

Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition (Poshan) Abhiyan also known as National Nutrition Mission (NNM) is a Government of India’s flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.

There are many schemes for nutritional development but what is lacking is the synergy and link between the schemes to achieve a common goal. NNM through robust convergence mechanism and other components would envisage creating the synergy.

The scheme is funded by Government Budgetary Support (50%) and 50% by International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) or other multilateral development bank MDB.

OBJECTIVES OF NNM

  • Reduce stunting by at least 2% per annum
  • Reduce undernutrition by 2% per annum
  • Anaemia among young children, women and adolescent girls by 3% per annum
  • Low birth weight by 2% per annum
  • Mission 25 by 2022: Although the target for Stunting is reducing 2% p.a., Mission would strive to achieve a reduction in Stunting from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.

IMPLEMENTATION

NITI Aayog has played a crucial role in shaping the POSHAN Abhiyaan. National Nutrition Strategy, released by NITI Aayog in 2017, was subsumed into the scheme. NITI Aayog is entrusted with the task of monitoring and undertaking periodic evaluations of the POSHAN Abhiyaan.

Four-point strategy/pillars for the Implementation of the POSHAN Abhiyaan:

  1. Inter-sectoral convergence for better service delivery - mapping of various schemes contributing towards addressing malnutrition and creating a robust convergence
  2. Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for real-time growth monitoring and tracking of women and children
  3. Intensified health and nutrition services for the first 1000 days
  4. Jan Andolan (Making it a people’s movement - peoples participation in accessing benefits)
