    5. Western Indian Ocean
    6. Fiji
    7. Tristan da Cunha, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean

Need for the alliance

The world is covered by more than 70% of oceans. Oceans are crucial for human survival as they regulate weather, rainfall and oxygen levels in the air. However, they are under crisis due to threats posed by increasing pollution, climate change and over-fishing post industrial period.

According to the Marine Protection Atlas, more than 7% of the world oceans have been designated as “protected areas”. However, in reality only 2.7% are “fully protected”. "Some of them are just in name only, and the Blue Nature Alliance poised to fully implement and maintain these zones.

Marine Protection Atlas

  • It was launched by the Marine Conservation Institute in 2012.
  • The atlas was prepared to provide the best available information on marine protection so that the marine conservation community can work together to protect at least 30% of the world's oceans by 2030.
  • It has been built based on the World Database on Protected Areas.

World Database on Protected Areas

  • The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) contains the comprehensive global database on terrestrial and marine protected areas.
  • It was a joint project between International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Conclusion

As greenhouse gas emissions continue to threaten our world, restoring and maintaining the health of our ocean through efforts such as the Blue Nature Alliance can help to preserve biodiversity and buffer the planet against the devastating impacts of climate change
