Humanitarian trust fund for Afghanistan: Organisation of Islamic Cooperation

Why in News

  • A meeting of foreign ministers from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) agreed to establish a humanitarian trust fund to address the growing economic crisis in Afghanistan.

Key Points

  • The fund will be set up under the Islamic Development Bank to channel aid to Afghanistan in coordination with other groups.
  • Allowing Afghanistan access to its financial resources would be pivotal to preventing economic collapse and said realistic pathways to unfreezing billions of dollars in frozen central bank reserves should be explored.

Trust Fund by United Nation:

  • The United Nations has set up a special trust fund to provide urgently needed cash directly to Afghans through a system that has pulled billions of dollars from Afghanistan's closed central bank reserves since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Germany is a first contributor to the fund.

PM Modi visits Prayagraj and participates in a programme attended by lakhs of women

Why in News

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh and participated in a programme being held to empower women, especially at the grassroot level.

Key Points

  • The Prime Minister transferred an amount of Rs. 1000 crore in the bank account of Self Help Groups (SHGs), benefitting around 16 lakh women members of the SHGs.
  • This transfer is being done under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM), with 80,000 SHGs receiving Community Investment Fund (CIF) of Rs. 1.10 lakh per SHG and 60,000 SHGs receiving Revolving Fund of Rs. 15000 per SHG.
  • The programme witnessed the Prime Minister encouraging Business Correspondent-Sakhis (B.C.-Sakhis), by transferring Rs. 4000 as first month's stipend in account of 20,000 B.C.-Sakhis.
  • During the programme, the Prime Minister also transferred a total amount of over 20 crore to more than 1 lakh beneficiaries under the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Scheme. 
  • The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of 202 Supplementary Nutrition Manufacturing Units.

Key Points

  • The unique initiative is part of the Government’s ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, and was kicked off by Olympic Gold Medallist Neeraj Chopra in Gujarat this month.
  • Taking the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unique school visit campaign ahead, Indian wrestler and Tokyo Olympics Bronze Medallist Bajrang Punia will visit Haryana’s Aarohi Model School in Panipat on December 23rd and meet the young students to talk about the importance of Santulit Aahaar (Balanced Diet), Fitness and Sports.
  • The special school campaign is jointly being organized by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Nagaland creates three new districts- Tseminyu, Niuland, Chumukedima

  • The three new districts are Tseminyu, Niuland and Chumukedima.

  • Niuland and Chumukedima have been carved out of Dimapur district, while the Tseminyu sub-division in Kohima district has been upgraded to a district.

Odisha CM inaugurates Mukhyamantri Vayu Swasthya Seva scheme

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Mukhyamantri Vayu Swasthya Seva scheme and launched air ambulances for residents of four tribal-dominated districts — Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Kalahandi.

Key Points

  • Under the new scheme, critical patients can be airlifted to hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and specialised doctors — neurologists, nephrologists and cardiologists from various medical colleges and private hospitals — will fly to the four districts under per a pre-arranged schedule to treat patients.
  • A team of doctors, including a cardiologist and urologist, took the inaugural flight from Biju Patnaik airport in Bhubaneswar to Malkangiri.
