Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme

Why in News:

  • The Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme has been extended by the Central Government for another five years for the students of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Key Point:

  • The Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) was launched in 2011 by the Congress-led UPA government to provide funding to 5,000 meritorious students every year for studies in private and government educational institutions across the country.
  • It is implemented by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), with the aim of promoting employment opportunities for the students of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
  • The period of the scheme was supposed to end last year, but the central government has extended it for another five years for the benefit of the students.
  • In the Prime Minister's Special Scholarship Scheme, a provision of 4,500 seats has been made for general education courses (bachelor’s in arts, Commerce, and Science) and 250 seats for engineering and medical degrees.

Country's premier documentary film festival - Mumbai International Film Festival

Why in News:

  • The 17th Mumbai International Documentary, Short Film and Animation Film Festival (Mumbai International Film Festival) was organized in Mumbai.

Key Point:

  • 808 films from 30 countries have been screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival. In which 102 films (35 International and 67 National) will be screened in the Competition category and 18 films will be shown in the MIFF Prism category.
  • The best film of the festival will be given the Golden Conch Award and a prize of ten lakh rupees. Other awards include a cash prize of one to five lakh rupees, silver marbles, a trophy, and a certificate.
  • 11 films from Bangladesh have also been included in the Mumbai International Film Festival which will be telecast at the festival.
  • The Mumbai International Film Festival can also be viewed online and admission to the festival is free.
