Besides space agencies such as NASA and ISRO, tech behemoths such as Amazon, SpaceX, and One Web also are attempting to expand their reach into space. Its mission is to build and launch something that will boost connectivity throughout the universe.

Following these companies' footsteps, a group of Indian students from several prestigious universities and colleges have partnered to conceptualise, design, and develop UNITYSat, a constellation of 75 satellites launched weeks or days before India's 75th Independence Day celebrations.

Here's everything else we know about the project thus far.

UNITYSat Features

  1. UNITYSat is a space project launched by many young Indian scholars from Chandigarh University, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, and 11 other universities.
  2. The satellite constellation was explicitly created to commemorate India's 75th anniversary of independence and is meant to help the country advance in the race to achieve LEO (LEO).
  3. Since 2020, the student-led mission has always been in the planning, intending to encourage the IoT in space.
  4. The satellite constellation will be in Lower Earth Orbit for two to four years.

UNITYSat's Mission

  1. UNITYsat will be the first inter-satellite and ground network technology to showcase IoT in space over a long distance.
  2. This mission will also provide new information about the materials needed to build, test, and operate a satellite constellation.
  3. As the satellites pass over India, they would also provide live audio streaming and broadcasting from the LEO zone.
  4. The satellite constellation would be in Lower Earth Orbit for two to four years.

UNITYSat Mission's Concern

Since 75 satellites are expected to be operational for 2-4 years, concerns have been expressed about the advent of garbage in space. Since the 1950s, there has been a growing public outcry over the ever-increasing amount of garbage in LEO, where thousands of satellites are stationed.

The Chinese government recently informed the United Nations General Assembly that potential collisions involving their under-construction space station and the SpaceX Starlink constellation had been avoided.

UNITYSat Makes Its Debut

Many Indian students launched the space mission a week before India's 75th Freedom Day to mark the country's 75th year of freedom. India has deployed 50 satellites in a single operation, and this mission is expected to be similar.

UNITYSat - More Junk, More Satellites

  1. Since the 1950s, there has been a growing outcry about accumulating junk in the Low Earth Orbit, where thousands of satellites are stationed. The Chinese government recently told the United Nations General Assembly about prospective collisions. It was avoided under the space station and the SpaceX Starlink constellation.
  2. There are concerns about introducing garbage to orbit, with India deploying these 75 satellites for two to four years.

India, known for launching low-cost Moon missions and even lower-cost launch services, aims to lead the new-age space race by encouraging its students to investigate the vacuum surrounding our planet. This constellation might be the first step in that direction.
