India is situated in South Asia. Due to its strategic location, India is blessed with a variety of flora and fauna, including some of the rarest bird species. The peacock or Pavo Cristatus was declared the national bird of India in 1963 owing to its unique beauty and grace.

All the 28 states and 8 union territories have their own state birds. The state birds of India are native to the respective union territories and states and are of great ecological importance.

It must be noted here that among all the Indian states and union territories, the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu has not been assigned a state bird as yet. It is the only union territory/state in India without a typified state bird.

Peacock - The National Bird of India

In 1963, the peacock or the Indian peafowl was designated as the national bird of India. The designation of this bird as the national bird was due to myriad reasons, the top one being its religious significance and its involvement in numerous traditions of India.
