The Kerala Government has come up with a new venture called “Smart Kitchen Scheme''. The sole purpose of the venture is to modernise the kitchen and reduce the difficulty being faced by homemakers. The Finance Minister has kept initial funding of 5 crores to be implemented by Kerala State Financial Enterprise (KSFE). The state government of Kerala announced the scheme on 26th may 2021 and it was implemented on 10th July 2021.

Smart Kitchen Scheme Objectives

The main motive of the scheme is to provide loans to women for purchasing household equipment. They can comfortably renovate their kitchen. The cost of the equipment can be paid in regular investments within five years. It is also decided that the financial burden will be reduced in different sectors of the community. The government is planning to financially help the backward sectors with utensils. Further, the loan can be equally distributed among the beneficiary, state government, and local self-government.

Thoughts behind Smart Kitchen Scheme

The first government of the Left Democratic Front under the leadership of Pinarayi Vijayan under its last budget introduced the Smart Kitchen Initiative. The LDF government was already well-known due to its gender budgeting during its previous years. In the budget for the year 2020-21, the expenditure for the plan had increased to Rs. 1,347 crores from Rs. 760 crores during 2016-17, accounting for 6.54% compared to the previous 4% of the plan share.

The key highlight of the final budget was the creation of jobs and the participation of women. According to the government, women would be able to participate more in the labour force if the burden of the household chores on them decreased. It can be achieved through the mechanisation of kitchens, which led to the birth of this scheme.

Kudumbashree, Kerala's community organisation that works towards the empowerment of women in rural as well as urban areas will get preference in purchasing equipment under the project. There won't be any compensation or casualties being demanded from the women's sector.

The Smart Kitchen Scheme is a creative project and has received praises from numerous households in Kerela. It portrays a strong future and the initiative is well-appreciated.
